DAGGER for the CADET - SABER for the OFFICER

Since 1848, a uniform dagger became mandatory for the Søe Cadet Compagniet (founded 1701 and today known as the Navy's officer school), and has remained largely unchanged since. The cadet dagger is worn in a black sheath slung over the right shoulder. When a naval cadet is commissioned as an officer, the cadet dagger is replaced by a saber.
