At the far end of the Mull of Kintyre, where the Atlantic rolls into Campbeltown Loch, sits a distillery that still does things the old way. No shortcuts, no outsourcing – just barley, fire and patience.

Our take on Springbank 15 Year Old

Springbank is the only distillery in Scotland that still handles every single stage of production itself – from malting to bottling – on the same site, by the same hands. The barley is floor-malted, dried over the distillery's own kiln, and distilled two and a half times: part of the spirit is run through the stills twice, part three times, and the two streams are blended afterwards. It's a technique unique to Springbank, and it's a big part of why the whisky has such an oily, layered character.

The 15 Year Old is a permanent part of the core range and is predominantly matured in sherry casks, giving the whisky a dark, rich colour and a wealth of dried fruit and spice. Springbank never adds caramel colouring and never chill-filters – what's in the glass is exactly what came out of the cask.

Founded in 1828, the distillery is still family-owned by the Mitchell family, making it Scotland's oldest independent distillery. At a time when most of the big names have been bought up by international drinks groups, that's something worth raising a glass to.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Dark chocolate, demerara sugar and Christmas cake meet toasted almonds and a touch of burnt oak, with a hint of rope and sea salt underneath – a reminder of just how close the distillery sits to the water.

    Palate

Creamy and full-bodied with raisin bread, figs, marzipan and Brazil nuts. The sweetness is kept in check by a light smokiness and a touch of pepper, giving the whisky depth without becoming heavy.

    Finish

Long and warm, with sherry and oak lingering well after the last sip, rounded off by a faint, peaty smoke.

    Did you know?

Springbank is the only Scottish distillery where part of each batch is triple-distilled and part double-distilled, then blended back together. It's one of the main reasons Springbank tastes so different from its Campbeltown neighbours.

Questions and answers about Springbank 15 Year Old

Is Springbank 15 Year Old worth the money?

Yes – Springbank is one of the most respected names in whisky, and the 15 Year Old delivers a depth and complexity that matches whiskies costing far more. The price reflects the craft behind it: everything from malting to bottling happens in-house, which is rare in Scotland today.

What does Springbank 15 Year Old taste like?

It's rich and sherry-forward, with notes of dark chocolate, figs and marzipan, rounded off by a light smokiness and a dry, salty edge. It's heavier and more complex than the 10 Year Old.

Is Springbank 15 Year Old a rare bottle?

No, it's a permanent part of Springbank's core range, but demand is high and it's often out of stock at retailers.

What makes Springbank 15 Year Old special?

Springbank is the only distillery in Scotland that handles its entire production itself, from floor malting to bottling. That gives the whisky a genuinely handcrafted character.

How should I store my Springbank 15 Year Old?

Standing or lying down both work, as long as the bottle is kept cool and away from direct sunlight. Once opened, it keeps well for several years.

Is Springbank 15 Year Old a good gift?

Yes, it's a safe choice for the whisky enthusiast who values tradition and craftsmanship over the latest hyped release.

Should Springbank 15 Year Old be served with ice?

It's best enjoyed neat, perhaps with a drop of water to open up the aromas. Ice will mute much of the sherry and spice character that makes this whisky special.

Which glass suits Springbank 15 Year Old best?

A tulip-shaped glass concentrates the aromas best. See our range of whisky glasses.

Is Springbank 15 Year Old smoky/peated?

Only lightly. Springbank typically sits around 10-15 ppm phenol, giving a hint of smoke rather than a fully peated whisky.

    What defines whisky from Campbeltown?

Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of the world, with over 30 distilleries. Today only three remain, and the style is often described as oily, salty and a little rustic – a clear contrast to the lighter Speyside whiskies.

    Why is Springbank still family-owned?

The Mitchell family has owned the distillery since the 1800s and has consistently refused to sell, even as international drinks companies bought up most of Scotland. That makes Springbank one of the last genuinely independent distilleries in the country.
