Some bottles wear their age well. This one, its gold-edged label starting to peel at the corners, still carries the story of a classic Italian bitter born in Trentino, long before Aperol Spritz became a summer cliché.

    Expert description

Solari Bitter Aperitif is an Italian Bitter Liqueur made from an original Italian recipe and bottled at 25%.

The bottle is a licensed product of Distillerie Sembenotti in Trento, imported to the German market by HAY Markenimport GmbH in Erftstadt. The postal code format on the label (5042) predates Germany's 1993 postcode reform, which places the bottling somewhere in the 1980s or very early 1990s. Solari belongs to the same family of Italian bitter aperitifs as Campari and Aperol — deep red in the glass, rooted in the classic Italian aperitivo tradition where bitter herbal and citrus extracts form the backbone of the flavour.

The label itself carries three serving suggestions straight from the producer, along with an instruction to serve it well chilled.

    Did you know?

Distillerie Sembenotti is still family-run in Trento today — in 2020 the Sembenotti brothers also took over the historic Distilleria Alpina, founded in 1930, carrying another old Trentino bitter tradition forward into a new generation.

Frequently asked questions about Solari Bitter Aperitif

Is it still safe to drink a bottle of Solari Bitter Aperitif this old?

Drinkability cannot be guaranteed for a bottle of this age. Bitter aperitifs with sugar content and herbal extracts can change character over decades, so the bottle should mainly be seen as a collector's item rather than one for active consumption.

Why is this bottle interesting to collectors?

Solari Bitter Aperitif is a piece of Italian aperitivo history from before brands like Campari and Aperol came to dominate the category completely. The German import label and the old postal code format also make it a time capsule from the 1980s import market.

What's the difference between Solari and well-known bitters like Campari or Aperol?

Solari belongs to the same category of Italian herbal and citrus-based bitter liqueurs, but is a lesser-known brand compared to the big names. It was produced by Distillerie Sembenotti in Trento and sold through German import channels rather than becoming a global bestseller.

How should an old bottle like this be stored?

Upright, cool and dark, away from direct sunlight, as with most older spirits. The label is already fragile, so careful handling is recommended if you want the bottle to keep its appearance.

Can Solari Bitter Aperitif be used in cocktails?

The label itself suggests both a long drink with soda water and a version with orange juice. As a classic Italian bitter it could in principle also work in drinks like a Negroni or Americano, again with the usual caveats about the bottle's age and condition.

Where was Solari Bitter Aperitif produced?

At Distillerie Sembenotti in Trento, in Trentino, northern Italy — a distillery that still exists and still produces bitters and liqueurs today.
