Pope Rum cocktails: recipes from Hurricane to Espresso Martini
POPE Hurricane – A tropical classic with a modern twist
Let yourself be carried straight to the pulsing streets of New Orleans, where jazz fills the air and cocktails are served with character. It was right here, in the heart of the French Quarter, that the Hurricane was created in the 1940s. Pat O'Brien, owner of one of the city's most iconic bars, had a stockroom full of rum – a spirit nobody really wanted. To get the rum moving, he created a fruity, colourful drink that quickly became a favourite with the city's party crowd.
Now POPE has breathed new life into this classic and made it even more irresistible. With its smooth flavour and warm notes, POPE fits perfectly in this exotic cocktail – a real carnival in a glass.
Recipe – How to make your own POPE Hurricane:
Ingredients:
– 12 cl POPE
– 3 cl freshly squeezed lime juice
– 3 cl freshly squeezed orange juice
– 1.5 cl passion fruit purée
– 1.5 cl sugar syrup
– 1 cl grenadine
How to make it:
Pour all ingredients into a shaker with plenty of crushed ice
Shake well until the drink is ice cold and delicious
Strain into a tall wine glass filled with crushed ice
Garnish with a slice of orange and a cherry for the classic look, if you like
The result? A fresh, fruity and seductive cocktail with tropical notes and a little bit of history in every sip. Perfect for warm summer evenings, festive occasions – or just when you want to treat yourself to something extra nice.
POPE Negroni – An Italian icon with a tropical twist
The Negroni is a timeless classic from 20th-century Italy – known and loved for its elegant balance between bitterness and sweetness. It's traditionally made with gin, but with POPE this iconic drink gets new life. POPE's fruity, slightly sweet notes work wonderfully with the bitter Campari and the rich sweet vermouth and give you a Negroni with depth, character and warmth.
Recipe – POPE Negroni:
– 4 cl POPE
– 4 cl Campari
– 4 cl Sweet Vermouth
How to make it:
Pour all ingredients into a shaker with crushed ice and shake well. Strain into a short whisky glass filled with ice, and garnish with a twist of orange peel for the classic Negroni look.
Tip: This version with rum instead of gin makes the Negroni both rounder and more approachable – perfect for seasoned Negroni fans and for those curious about a bitter but balanced cocktail.
Whether as an aperitif before dinner or a relaxed treat at the weekend, POPE Negroni is a safe choice.
POPE Daiquiri – A tropical classic with character
The Daiquiri is the epitome of Caribbean elegance. A simple but refined cocktail that comes from Cuba and became popular with American sailors and bar regulars such as Ernest Hemingway. With POPE the Daiquiri gets an extra dimension – the fruity notes and clean flavour lift the classic to new heights.

A POPE Daiquiri is fresh, fruity and irresistible – perfect as an aperitif or for long summer evenings.
POPE Old Fashioned – Tradition meets tropical finesse
The Old Fashioned is one of the world's oldest cocktails, and it proves that simplicity is often the key to greatness. In this version bourbon is replaced by POPE, which gives the drink a warm, smooth and slightly more exotic character.

– 5 cl POPE
– 1 sugar cube or 1 cl sugar syrup
– A few dashes of Angostura bitters
– Orange peel for garnish
How to make it:

POPE Old Fashioned is a modern reinterpretation of a true classic – simple, deep and full of charm.
POPE Espresso Martini – The perfect pick-me-up
The Espresso Martini was created in 1980s London, when a model asked bartender Dick Bradsell for a drink that could "wake me up, and then f*** me up." The result? An iconic cocktail that combines caffeine and alcohol in perfect harmony. With POPE as the base the drink gets a smoother, rounder character – and a lovely Caribbean edge.
Recipe – POPE Espresso Martini:
– 5 cl POPE
– 3 cl freshly brewed espresso
– 2 cl coffee liqueur (e.g. Kahlúa)
– 1 cl sugar syrup (optional)
How to make it:

About Pope Rum and Pope Spirits

our food recipesAbout Pope Spirits:Det Danske Vinkompagni (the Danish Wine Company) is located in Kolding. Besides trading good wine and spirits in very close cooperation with some of Denmark's leading wholesalers, the small company also has a stated mission to share and spread knowledge about good wine and fine spirits. Claus Wilms has done exactly that since 1997, when he founded the small company together with his wife Anette.
This story begins one of the first days of 1985, when Claus was hired as the youngest consultant at an old, conservative wine company, where he was given responsibility for the exotic North Jutland. After four years it became a two-year detour as a hotel manager, after which he returned to the old company as a consultant, this time with southern Jutland and Funen as his area. After six years of growing responsibilities, also at a couple of other wine companies, the foundation was laid for Det Danske Vinkompagni. And it's still there.
All this long experience has now recently launched the Wilms family on a new little adventure in the form of a spiced rum blended from some of the best from Guatemala, Nicaragua and Trinidad and Tobago. This blend, full of exotic fruit and spices, was shipped to Denmark with good rock sugar added and reduced to a pleasant 35% with mineral-rich Bornholm spring water for a unique flavour and perfect balance.
Pope Rum is a very pleasant acquaintance. The aroma is seductively exotic with notes of sweet citrus fruit, vanilla and mild pepper, and the taste is warm, spicy, smooth and exotic with a fine undertone from the 10 years in oak casks. It's lovely on its own but can easily handle being shaken up with lime, orange, passion fruit and grenadine.

Listen to our podcast about Pope Rum cocktails
The episode is in English and runs for 21 minutes. It is about how Pope Rum gives classic drinks like the Hurricane and the Negroni a tropical twist.
Our verdict: which Pope Rum cocktail should you start with?
Start with a Daiquiri. It has only three ingredients, and you can taste the rum clearly. If you want something festive, go for a Hurricane or a Rum Punch. If you like bitter, a Negroni with rum is a good choice, and in December the Christmas Toddy is the easiest. The rum has rock sugar added and a sweetness of its own, so taste as you go before you pour in all the sugar syrup.
