A few months in an oak cask is enough to give a clear mezcal a golden hue and a whole new layer of flavour, without drowning the agave's character. That balance is what Ojo de Tigre Reposado is built around.

    Expert Description

Ojo de Tigre Reposado is a Mexican Reposado Mezcal at 37% ABV, produced by Casa Ausencio León in Tlacolula de Matamoros, Oaxaca.

The mezcal is built on the same two agaves as the Joven expression: Espadín from Oaxaca and the rarer Tobalá from the mountains of Puebla, both sustainably grown. The brand was created in collaboration with Mexican actor and producer Luis Gerardo Méndez, and the name is taken from the tiger's-eye gemstone.

After distillation, the mezcal rests for 4-6 months in oak casks, where it takes on colour and notes of nuts, caramel and vanilla before being bottled.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Vanilla and cooked agave from the cask, with a touch of gentle smoke in the background.

    Palate

Nuts, caramel and vanilla play together with subtle smoke, cooked agave and herbal notes.

    Finish

Soft and lightly herbal, with a warm close from the cask ageing.

Frequently Asked Questions about Ojo de Tigre Reposado Mezcal

What does "Reposado" mean on a mezcal label?

Reposado means rested and describes mezcal that has spent a shorter period in a cask after distillation – for Ojo de Tigre Reposado, 4-6 months in oak casks.

What does Ojo de Tigre Reposado taste like?

Expect nuts, caramel and vanilla from the cask ageing, complemented by subtle smoke, cooked agave and herbal notes in a soft, lightly herbal finish.

Which agaves are used in Ojo de Tigre Reposado?

The same combination as the Joven expression: cultivated Espadín from Oaxaca and the rarer Tobalá from Puebla.

Neat at room temperature in a small glass, where the cask's nutty, vanilla notes get room to unfold. It also works well to close out a meal.

Can Ojo de Tigre Reposado be used in cocktails?

It can certainly go into a spirit-forward cocktail like an Old Fashioned variation, but the soft cask notes come through best when it's enjoyed neat.

Who is behind Ojo de Tigre?
