Laphroaig Lore 70cl / 48%Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky Distillery Bottling Tasting notes from MAD&WHISKYLaphroaig Lore The beautiful cave by the wide bay When I first tasted a small sip of Laphroaig Lore to the tones of Tom Paine's Bones sung by Hó-ró, while sitting in the boat in the middle of Aabenraa fjord, I experienced a magical moment. I enjoyed the smell of the campfire and the fresh sea that was eagerly waiting to be released on my palate. Now it was time for the long-awaited moment when it burned like a mild chili in my mouth, I noticed a taste of fresh walnut, salty caramel like the Lentz is known for and a sweetness in the spirit of the malt. I couldn't help myself and dripped three drops of seawater into the glass, causing the whisky to open up. Now it became slightly more salty without being too much. The whisky was now more rounded and got a hint of the citrus fruit yuzu, the aftertaste was present for a significantly longer time than the one you know from, for example, Port Askaig 100-proof. The challenge with Laphroaig Lore was for me to find a dish that could accompany this unique dram. I actually spent a month thinking deeply about what kind of dish it should be. I came to the conclusion that the ingredients I should play with were Jerusalem artichoke, buttered walnuts and langoustine. I prepared it as a soup but omitted the buttered walnuts because I had experienced that flavor in the whisky. I didn't regret that choice at all, the sea's own meat swimming around in the soup of Jerusalem artichokes and dill suited the whisky's smoke, strength, richness and the notes I had experienced that day at sea. I would recommend this combination to anyone, especially if you don't think whisky is for you. However, it requires a knowledgeable guide on how to properly taste a whisky otherwise you won't get that much closer to heaven as I was the moment the two met my otherwise critical palate. I dreamed for a moment to the southwest-facing coast of Laphroaig, where there might be a beautiful cave hidden by the wide bay, where I should really and more authentically sit and enjoy the two items together in a higher cohesion. I can rightly say slàinte and may the goddess of health be with you, because that experience was for me, to that extent, what life is all about. Pssst: Now you have the opportunity to buy this fantastic whisky at a favorable price of 869,- €.
