Jägermeister Bitter

A stag on the label, a secret blend of 56 herbs and a cold winter morning in 1935 – Jägermeister was born as Germany's answer to the perfect spiced liqueur. Today it's as much a part of bar culture as its name's hunting heritage suggests.

  • Green bottle with stag logo, German herbal liqueur
    Item no.: 22227865479-1230

The son of a vinegar maker spent years bringing 56 herbs, roots and spices together in a single bottle. The result was named after the patron saint of hunters and has carried the stag's cross out into the world ever since.

    Expert's description

Jagermeister is a German herbal liqueur at 35% ABV, bottled at 70 cl.

Behind the recipe stands Curt Mast, who in 1934 in Wolfenbuttel took over the family's vinegar and wine business from his father Wilhelm Mast. Curt Mast spent several years refining a blend of 56 different herbs, roots, spices, flowers and fruits before the recipe was finished, a recipe that, according to the official brand, has not changed since. The name Jagermeister means "master hunter", and the stag logo with its glowing cross between the antlers references the legend of Saint Hubertus, the patron saint of hunting. It is the very same recipe that is drunk ice-cold around the world today.

About Jägermeister Bitter

Jägermeister is a German spiced liqueur, launched in 1935 and since become one of the world's most recognisable spirits brands thanks to its stag emblem. For newcomers it's a sweetly spiced liqueur traditionally drunk ice-cold as a shot; for collectors it's notable that the secret recipe of 56 herbs, fruits and spices is still made using the same method as at launch, making Jägermeister one of the best-selling spirits brands in the world without ever changing its base formula.

History & background

Jägermeister was launched in 1935 by Curt Mast, whose family already ran a successful vinegar and wine business in the German town of Wolfenbüttel. Mast wanted to create a spiced liqueur that could match the herbal liqueurs already found in other European countries, spending several years perfecting a secret composition of 56 different herbs, fruits, roots and spices. The name, meaning 'master huntsman' in German, and the distinctive stag logo reference the German hunting tradition the brand has historically been associated with. From a local German liqueur, Jägermeister grew over the 20th and 21st centuries into a global phenomenon, especially popular as an ice-cold shot in bars worldwide.

Production & style

The liqueur is made from a secret blend of 56 herbs, fruits, and spices, macerated and aged in oak casks.

Signature style

Bitter, Spicy, Sweetish
The flavour is complex and bittersweet, with clear spiced notes.
