Some tequila is just tequila, and then there's the kind that's spent three decades resting in the Cuervo family's private cellars. Reserva de La Familia isn't a bottle you simply pour — it's one you sit down for.

    Expert Description

Jose Cuervo Reserva de La Familia is a Mexican Extra Añejo Tequila made from 100% agave, aged in French and American oak and bottled at 38%.

Like the rest of the Cuervo family's range, the bottle comes from the La Rojeña distillery in Jalisco, where tequila has been made since 1795. Reserva de La Familia was created in 1995 to mark the 200th anniversary of the Cuervo family's tequila venture, and it's considered the world's first commercial Extra Añejo Tequila. It's aged for an average of three years in French and American oak, and the final blend is complemented with tequila from reserves that have rested for over 30 years in the distillery's private cellars. Every bottle is handmade, wax-sealed and individually numbered, and the annual gift box is decorated each year by a celebrated Mexican artist.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Toasted almonds, vanilla and cinnamon, backed by oak spice and a hint of dried fruit.

    Palate

Rich and balanced between sweet and spicy, with dark chocolate, caramel and butterscotch, nutmeg and cooked agave underneath.

    Finish

The finish is long, elegant and velvety, with a lingering note of oak, cocoa and sweet spice.

Frequently Asked Questions about Jose Cuervo Reserva de La Familia

What is an Extra Añejo Tequila?

Extra Añejo is the oldest ageing category for tequila and requires at least three years in oak. Reserva de La Familia was the first commercial tequila ever released in this category.

Is Jose Cuervo Reserva de La Familia worth it?

It's a rare bottle from the Cuervo family's private reserves, blended with tequila that has rested for over 30 years, handmade and released in a numbered, limited run. That kind of craftsmanship and scarcity is hard to find in a single bottle.

How should Jose Cuervo Reserva de La Familia be stored?

Upright, cool and dark, away from direct sunlight — like any other oak-aged spirit of this calibre.

What does Jose Cuervo Reserva de La Familia taste like?

It offers dark chocolate, caramel and toasted almonds, with a long, velvety finish of oak and sweet spice.

How is Jose Cuervo Reserva de La Familia best served?

Neat, at room temperature, in a small glass, so you can follow every nuance from nose to finish.

How long is Jose Cuervo Reserva de La Familia aged?

An average of three years in French and American oak, with the blend complemented by tequila from reserves aged over 30 years.

    Why is every bottle handmade?

Because Reserva de La Familia is the Cuervo family's most exclusive series, with every bottle hand-signed, numbered and wax-sealed as part of its heritage since 1995.

Is Jose Cuervo Reserva de La Familia a good gift?

Yes, it's a natural choice for a spirits collector or for a truly special occasion.
