There is no whisky in this one. It is the jug you pour the few drops of water into the whisky from — the kind that stood on the bar back when every distillery had its own made.

Please note: This is a vintage whisky jug that has been used and may therefore show wear.

    The expert's description

The Glenkinchie whisky jug is a ceramic water jug carrying the distillery name, made for adding water to whisky.

These jugs were originally made as bar equipment and handed out to pubs and whisky bars. They are small on purpose, because it does not take much water, and most have a spout that can dose a few drops at a time.

This one is used and carries its age with it. It still works as it should, and gets used as much for display on a shelf as beside the bottle.

    Specifications

Name: Glenkinchie Whisky Jug Water Jug
    Brand: Glenkinchie
    Type: Ceramic water jug
Use: For adding water to whisky
Condition: Vintage, used, may show wear

    How to use the jug

Fill the jug with cold water and pour a few drops into the whisky at a time. Taste between each addition — it does not take much, and there is no going back once the water is in the glass.

    Condition and wear

The jug is used and may carry marks from many years on a bar. Look through the photos before buying, and expect the possibility of small chips in the glaze or faded print.

    Did you know?

A few drops of water really do change the aroma. Researchers have measured that some of the compounds giving whisky its character gather more densely near the surface when the alcohol strength drops a little.

Frequently asked questions about the Glenkinchie whisky jug

    Does it come with whisky?

No. This is the water jug alone. It is used for adding water to whisky and is sold without contents.

    Why add water to whisky?

Because a little water opens up the aroma and takes the edge off the alcohol, especially at higher strengths. A few drops are enough.

How much water should I add?

Start with two or three drops in a regular dram, taste, and add more if you want. It is easier to add than to take away.

    What kind of water?

Cold water with no flavour of its own. Tap water works fine in most places, but if yours is hard or tastes of chlorine, use bottled spring water.

Can the jug go in the dishwasher?

Keep it out. Print and glaze on older ceramics rarely survive machine washing — rinse it by hand in lukewarm water instead.

    Is it used or new?

Used. It is a vintage jug, so it shows signs of having been in service, and condition varies from piece to piece.

Does it work as a gift?

Yes, especially for someone who already has the whisky. See the full selection at Glenkinchie or browse our Scotch Whisky section.
