Same vintage, same age — but a completely different wine world. Where its sister bottle got Barolo, this 1999 distillate instead met Bordeaux.

    The expert's description

Edradour 1999 Vintage Bordeaux Cask Finish 21 years old is a Single Highland Malt Whisky finished in Bordeaux casks and bottled at 55.7%.

The whisky was distilled on 12 October 1999 and, after its primary maturation, received a finishing period in casks that previously held Bordeaux red wine. The whisky was bottled on 21 October 2020 after 21 years of total maturation and, like its Barolo sibling, is a discontinued vintage release.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Blackcurrant and cassis, with a lightly cedary undercurrent and a hint of tobacco.

    Palate

Dark berries and plum, where the Bordeaux cask's tannins meet Edradour's soft, honeyed malt.

    Finish

Long with dry tannin, cedar and a finish of dark chocolate.

    Investment potential

This release is assessed to have high investment potential, largely due to the 1999 vintage, 21 years of maturation and a rare Bordeaux cask finish from a discontinued bottling. This is a general assessment based on available information about rarity and demand, not a guarantee of future value growth.

    Did you know?

Bordeaux casks are used more rarely for whisky finishing than sherry and port, because French wine casks are traditionally sold on for other purposes rather than ending up with Scottish distilleries — making this cask type a genuine rarity in Scotch whisky.

Frequently asked questions about Edradour 1999 Bordeaux Cask Finish 21 yo

Is this whisky still in production?

No, it's a discontinued vintage release from 1999, like the Barolo release from the same series.

What's the difference between this and the Barolo release?

Both were distilled in 1999 and bottled in 2020, but the Bordeaux cask gives a more cedary, blackcurrant-driven character than the Barolo cask's more cherry and rose-like profile.

What is a Bordeaux cask finish?

It means the whisky, after its primary maturation, received a finishing period in casks that previously held French Bordeaux red wine.

Is it worth the money as a collector's bottle?

As a discontinued 1999 vintage with a rare French wine finish, it's appealing to collectors looking for something beyond the usual sherry and bourbon cask releases.

    How many bottles exist?

The exact number isn't disclosed for this discontinued release.

    How should it be served?

Neat, at room temperature, in a nosing glass, so the wine's tannins and the whisky's malt can fully unfold.
