Local barley, local knowledge and soft water from the River Teith. Deanston has never been in a hurry — and here you get the whole idea in five centilitres.

    Expert description

Deanston 12 years is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at 46.3% without chill filtration and without added colouring in a 5 cl miniature.

The distillery sits in a converted cotton mill from 1785 at Doune and has been distilling since the mid-1960s. The water comes from the River Teith just outside, which also drives the distillery's hydroelectric plant. Deanston changed its style some years ago: up in strength to 46.3%, no chill filtration and no caramel colouring. That new style is what you get in this miniature.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Honey and malt first, then fresh apple, vanilla and a light cereal note.

    Palate

Soft and full for its strength. Honey, ginger and malted barley, with a creamy texture the absence of filtration provides.

    Finish

Medium and dry, with malt, honey and a mild spiced warmth.

    Did you know?

Deanston's warehouse is the old weaving shed from the cotton mill. The vaulted roof keeps the temperature constant year round with no heating or cooling at all — a building from 1785 solving a problem modern distilleries spend electricity on.

Frequently asked questions about Deanston 12 years Miniature

What is a miniature good for?

It works as a sample, a small gift or an advent calendar filler. Five centilitres is roughly two drams and enough to form an impression.

    What does non-chill filtered mean?

That the whisky has not been chilled and filtered to prevent haze. The texture is fuller, and the whisky may turn slightly cloudy when cold — a sign the oils are still there.

    Why 46.3 percent?

Because Deanston raised the strength when it changed its style. At 46.3% the whisky can be bottled without chill filtration and stay clear, and it gains more body than at 40%.

    Is it peated?

No. Deanston uses no peated malt. The whisky is honeyed and malty, and for smoke you should head towards Islay Whisky.

    What defines Deanston?

A distillery in a converted cotton mill by the River Teith, running on its own hydroelectric power. The style is soft, honeyed and malty with a creamy texture.

Is it good for a beginner?

Yes. The miniature format makes it easy to try without committing, and the soft honeyed style is easy to like. See the rest of the region in our Highland Whisky.
