There's a quiet confidence to Saint-Preuil, the small village at the heart of Grande Champagne, where the Bouju family has distilled its own wine into cognac since 1805.

No bought-in grapes, no outsourced eaux-de-vie – just their own vines, their own copper still, and a belief in doing things at the pace cognac demands.

    Expert's Description

Daniel Bouju Réserve Grande Champagne Cognac is a Grande Champagne Cognac aged in French Limousin oak casks and bottled at 40%.

Daniel Bouju is one of the last truly independent cognac houses in Charente – they grow their own grapes (mainly Ugni Blanc, complemented by Colombard and Folle Blanche), vinify their own wine, and distil it themselves in traditional Charente copper stills.

The Réserve is the house's entry point into the Grande Champagne style that defines the whole range: no added caramel colouring, no boisé, no shortcuts. Just wine, fire, and time in oak.

The cognac is bottled in a carafe-shaped bottle – a "carafon" – giving it a more festive, gift-ready look than the classic square cognac bottle.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Soft and floral, with ripe apricots and nectarines unfolding slowly alongside a touch of vanilla and a hint of gingerbread.

    Palate

Clean and balanced, with fresh fruit and spice building towards a lightly peppery edge.

    Finish

Long and fragrant, with a dry, woody finish that hints at just how much time is actually sitting in the glass.

Frequently Asked Questions about Daniel Bouju Réserve Grande Champagne Cognac

What makes Daniel Bouju Réserve special?

It comes from one of the few cognac houses that grows, vinifies, and distils all its own grapes on its own land in Saint-Preuil. That means complete control from vine to bottle, with no outsourced eaux-de-vie in the blend.

Is Daniel Bouju Réserve a good cognac for beginners?

Yes, it's a solid place to start if you want a taste of real Grande Champagne cognac without jumping straight to the oldest, priciest releases. The style is soft and fruity rather than heavy and harsh.

How should Daniel Bouju Réserve be served?

Best at room temperature in a cognac glass, so you can follow the nose from floral notes through to spice. Some prefer a single ice cube to open the aromas up even further.

Can Daniel Bouju Réserve be used in cocktails?

Yes, it works well in classics like the Sidecar or the French Connection, where the cognac's fruit and spice can play against other flavours.

Why is this cognac bottled in a carafe-shaped bottle?

It's a French tradition called "carafon" – a bottle shape originally meant to make the cognac more inviting to bring to the table, rather than keeping it tucked away in a cabinet.

Does Daniel Bouju add colouring or sugar to its cognacs?

No, the house is known for avoiding added caramel colouring and boisé. The colour in the glass comes entirely from time spent in oak.

What is Grande Champagne, and why does it matter?

It's the finest and most central of Cognac's six growing districts, known for producing the most elegant, long-ageing eaux-de-vie. All of Daniel Bouju's production comes exclusively from here.
