Brøndums Snaps

Brøndums has stood on Danish schnapps tables at Christmas and Easter for generations, a fixture of Danish aquavit tradition alongside herring and rye bread. The name is so deeply ingrained that for many Danes it's practically synonymous with aquavit itself. It's a bottle that needs no introduction.

No caraway here - only vanilla, caramel and a touch of citrus from two and a half years in American whiskey casks. Brøndum Fadlagret goes its own way.

    The Expert's Description

Brøndum Fadlagret Dansk Snaps is a Danish akvavit at 38% ABV, matured in casks rather than spiced with caraway.

The base is a malt distillate rested for 2.5 years in American whiskey casks before being flavoured with rum, sherry, orange peel and lemon peel. That makes Fadlagret one of the most unconventional bottlings in Brøndum's range - here it's the cask, not the spice rack, that sets the tone, with soft notes of vanilla, caramel and roasted wood.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Warm aroma of vanilla and caramel with a touch of orange peel and a hint of toasted wood.

    Palate

Soft, round flavour with clear cask character, where rum and sherry add depth and citrus peel a fresh counterpoint.

    Finish

Long, warm finish with notes of caramel, toasted wood and a light bitter citrus tone.

Caraway and liquorice on the nose, a mild bitterness on the finish - this is how Brøndum's classic snaps has tasted since Denmark first found its own voice in the akvavit glass.

    The Expert's Description

Brøndum Dansk Snaps is a Danish akvavit at 40% ABV, crystal clear in the glass and built around classic caraway spice.

The snaps carries the name of Brøndum, the brand historically regarded as Denmark's oldest, founded by Anthon Brøndum in Copenhagen in 1840. This bottling is the house's classic original recipe - pure and crystal clear, both in colour and in taste, letting caraway stand out clearly without added sweetness or cask influence.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Light and dry, spicy aroma of caraway with a touch of liquorice.

    Palate

Mild and balanced flavour of caraway and clove, clean and without added sweetness.

    Finish

Short and slightly bitter, leaving the palate dry and clean.

Round, mild and almost unassuming - that's the point. Brøndum Klar isn't meant as the finished product, but as the starting gun for your own homemade snaps.

    The Expert's Description

Brøndum Dansk Snaps Klar is a Danish akvavit at 40% ABV, developed as a mild, near-neutral base for homemade spiced snaps.

Where the house's other bottlings let caraway lead, Klar is toned down in spice and rounded off with acacia honey and malt. The result is a softer, less spirit-forward snaps, made to take on new flavours - whether that's berries, fruit or fresh herbs from the garden. It's the Danes' preferred starting point when homemade bjesk is on the table.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Mild, faintly sweet aroma with a touch of honey and malt behind a hint of caraway.

    Palate

Soft, round flavour where honey and malt take the edge off the spirit, leaving an almost neutral, welcoming base.

    Finish

Short and mild, with no sharp edges, ready to carry further flavour from berries or herbs.

Caraway, a touch of cinnamon and a hint of orange peel - the scent that has greeted Danes at the lunch table since 1840. Brøndum Kummen is the powerful original, the snaps that started it all.

    The Expert's Description

Brøndum Dansk Snaps Kummen Akvavit is a Danish akvavit at 45% ABV, spiced with caraway and made to a recipe that has barely changed since 1840.

Anthon Brøndum founded his distillery in Snaregade, Copenhagen, in 1840, and the caraway snaps launched that same year. It's regarded today as the oldest surviving snaps in Denmark. Where most other Brøndum bottlings sit at 40%, Kummen is turned up in both strength and spice - the boldest, fullest expression in the family, built to carry a heavy dose of caraway without being overwhelmed by it.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Bold, spicy aroma of caraway, supported by a light sweetness from cinnamon and a hint of orange peel.

    Palate

Full, warm flavour dominated by caraway, where cinnamon adds roundness and orange peel a fresh counterpoint to the spice.

    Finish

Long, spicy finish where caraway and cinnamon linger well after each sip.

About Brøndums Aquavit

Brøndums Snaps is a classic Danish aquavit with deep roots in Danish schnapps tradition. For the newcomer it's an accessible, spiced entry into the aquavit category; for the connoisseur and the nostalgic Dane, Brøndums is one of the most recognisable and historically rooted schnapps brands on the market, essential at the Christmas lunch and Easter table, where it traditionally accompanies herring, liver pâté and rye bread.

History & Background

Brøndums aquavit has its roots in 19th-century Danish distilling tradition, where local distillers made caraway- and dill-spiced aquavit for everyday use and festive occasions. The name has since established itself as one of the best-selling and most recognisable aquavit brands in Denmark, closely tied to Danish lunch traditions at Christmas, Easter and summer gatherings. Today Brøndums is part of a larger Danish spirits portfolio, but the recipe and classic spiced style have remained largely unchanged.

Production & Style

The aquavit is distilled from potatoes and spiced with caraway and other classic Nordic herbs following traditional Danish methods.

Signature Style

Spiced, Classic, Danish
The taste offers a spiced, caraway-forward character faithful to the classic Danish aquavit style.
