Caraway leans sideways in the fields of Norway's Vestland, while juniper bushes on Sjællands Odde hold their berries close to the stem. Two opposite ends of the Nordics, meeting in one glass.
The Expert's Description
VI ER AKVAVIT is a Danish small batch akvavit at 42.8% ABV, created by the young akvavit brand VI.ER, which has worked since 2016 to make akvavit exciting again.
The base is wind-blown caraway from Norway's Vestland, combined with hand-picked, wild-growing green and dark juniper berries from Sjællands Odde. The akvavit is distilled in small batches at the micro-distillery Nordisk Brænderi in northwest Jutland, close to the Bay of Denmark.
Because every ingredient is foraged rather than farmed, only limited quantities of each batch are made, giving it a more hand-crafted, exclusive character than most akvavits on the market.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Fresh, sharp caraway meets a floral trace of juniper, lending a resinous, almost woodland edge.
Palate
Crisp and full, where caraway lays down a lightly sweet, liquorice base while the juniper adds depth and a faint bitter edge.
Finish
Medium length, dry and spiced, with juniper and caraway resolving together into a clean close.

Did You Know?
For a spirit to be called akvavit, its main flavour must come from either caraway or dill, its strength must be at least 37.5%, and it cannot taste bitter, three rules VI ER AKVAVIT says it takes seriously in every batch.
