In Norse mythology Fenrir the wolf lies bound until the world ends. In Kolding the name has landed on a bottle. Behind it stand two hand-beaten copper pot stills of 500 litres and a distillery that has never been in a hurry to grow large.

    Expert description

Trolden Fenris Vodka is a Danish Vodka from Trolden in Kolding, triple distilled in pot stills and bottled at 37.5%.

Trolden started as a brewery in Kolding in 2005 and let the distillery follow later. There is no production line and no off-the-shelf answers; the stills are small enough for one person to watch a whole run. That naturally caps how much can leave the building, but that is also the entire point.

Choosing a pot still over a column is what decides how Fenris tastes. A column scrubs the spirit again and again until little more than alcohol and water remains. A pot still lets more of the raw material come across. So there is still malted sweetness and a lightly oily weight in the glass, where many other vodkas have been polished flat.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Mild and held back. A soft sweetness with something plum-like about it, and a dry grain note behind.

    Palate

Round and almost oily in the mouth. Malted sweetness fills the middle before a light peppery warmth arrives.

    Finish

Short to medium. The sweetness pulls away and a dry, grainy trace is left behind.

    Did you know?

Fenris also exists in a cocoa and orange version. Same spirit, same stills, but a flavouring that pulls the vodka towards the dessert glass rather than the freezer.

Frequently asked questions about Trolden Fenris Vodka

Why is it bottled at 37.5% rather than 40%?

37.5% is the lowest strength a spirit may carry and still be called vodka in the EU. Trolden sits right on that floor, and it is a deliberate choice: slightly lower strength lets the malted sweetness step forward instead of being burned off by alcohol.

What does the pot still method do to the flavour?

It leaves more character behind. Where a column can drive a spirit close to pure alcohol, a pot still stops earlier and carries more aroma compounds over. That gives the round, faintly fatty mouthfeel and the malted note that mark Fenris out.

    How is it best drunk?

Cold, but not ice cold. The freezer shuts it down and takes away the very sweetness that makes it interesting. Fridge temperature in a small glass is a better starting point, and you can always chill further from there.

    Which cocktails work with it?

The ones where the vodka should be heard. A Vodka Martini, a Bloody Mary or a plain Vodka Tonic all hold up, because the grain character has something to say. To compare other styles, browse our range of Vodka.

    Who is Fenris?

Fenrir is the son of Loki in Norse mythology. The gods bound him with a magical fetter because they feared him, and at Ragnarok he breaks free and kills Odin. The name was picked with care for a vodka that has not been polished smooth.

Is it made in Denmark from start to finish?

Yes. Both distillation and bottling happen in Kolding, where Trolden keeps brewery and distillery under one roof. This is not bought-in neutral spirit with a Danish label stuck on it.

    What else does Trolden make?

Beer above all, and their beer is left unfiltered. Beyond that, gin and liqueur from the same small stills. The Kolding brewhouse had hold of most of the Danish craft wave long before it became commonplace.
