A brown, kiln-fired ceramic face stares back at you as you drink - that is how tiki bars have set the mood since 1930s California, where exotic drinks and hand-carved mugs went hand in hand.
The Expert's Description
The Tiki Mug Akamu Mug 50 cl is a ceramic mug from the Tiki Mug range, sculpted as a brown, detailed tiki face with room for a 50 cl drink.
Tiki mugs have their roots in the American "Polynesian Pop" wave, where bars such as Don the Beachcomber and Trader Vic's began serving exotic rum cocktails in sculptural, handmade mugs inspired by Pacific Island carving traditions in the 1930s and 40s. Akamu carries that tradition forward with its deep relief carving and brown glaze finish.
Design & Material
The mug is cast in ceramic and hand-glazed, so every detail in the face - eyes, teeth, patterns - stands out clearly. The thick ceramic wall holds the cold from the ice cubes longer than an ordinary glass.
Use & Recommendation
The mug is built for fruity, exotic cocktails such as a Mai Tai, a Zombie or a Colada Crusher, where the 50 cl leaves plenty of room for both drink and garnish. Hand washing is recommended, so the glaze and the fine facial detail stay looking good for years to come.

Did You Know?
The first tiki mugs were made because bar owners wanted to give guests a tangible souvenir to take home - today, enthusiasts around the world still collect tiki mugs from specific bars and years, much like people collect whisky bottles.
