Stroh Rum

In 1832, Austrian Sebastian Stroh created a spirit that has since become the very symbol of après-ski and alpine cabins. Stroh Inländer Rum isn't technically rum, but a cane-sugar-based spirit whose name has become Austria's most famous export of its kind.

  • Bottle of Stroh Original 60% rum 100 cl
    Item no.: 22227865416-39-60-100 cl

For Christmas punch kettles and a whole winter of cocktails, the litre bottle of the milder Stroh is the obvious choice. Same fiery character, just more of it.

    Expert description

Stroh Original 60% is a Rum from Austria, bottled at 60% and here in the large 100 cl bottle, intended for households and bars that use it regularly in drinks and cocktails.

Stroh was founded in 1832 by Sebastian Stroh in Klagenfurt. Where the 80% edition mainly belongs in the kitchen, the 60% strength is made for more direct consumption, so the litre bottle is a natural choice for bars and households that regularly make hot drinks like Jagertee and Punsch or use Stroh in cocktails through the winter.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Sweet caramel and burnt sugar, approachable and round without the sharp edge of the 80% edition.

    Palate

Warm and sweet with vanilla and dark caramel, with a pleasant but clear alcoholic warmth.

    Finish

Soft and lingeringly sweet, with a light hint of spice.

Because the 60% strength is intended for direct consumption rather than baking, it is often sold in litre bottles for bars and festivities, where consumption is significantly higher than with the smaller 50 cl edition.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Powerful caramel and burnt sugar, with a sweet, almost syrupy aroma.

  • Bottle of Stroh Original 80 Austrian rum
    Item no.: 22227865416-39-20

Do not call it rum in Austria. Call it Inländer Rum, an explosive local specialty that has been filling cake batter and mulled wine since Franz Josef sat on the throne.

    Expert description

Stroh Original is a Rum from Austria, powerfully bottled at 80%.

The rum comes from the Austrian distillery Stroh, founded by Sebastian Stroh in 1832 in Klagenfurt. Because Stroh is not distilled from sugarcane molasses in the traditional Caribbean manner, it cannot legally be called rum in every market, which is why in Austria it carries the historic designation "Inländer Rum." At 80%, it is primarily intended for the kitchen, in baking, mulled wine and hot toddies, rather than as a dram consumed neat. This bottle is a 20cl size.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Burnt caramel, concentrated vanilla, molasses and spices, with smoky, empyreumatic undertones.

    Palate

Burning and intense at full strength, with butterscotch, caramel, candied citrus and a hint of star anise.

    Finish

Dense and long-lasting, with a sweet, spiced close.

    Did you know?

Stroh 80 is so widespread in Austria that it is often simply called "Rum" in everyday speech, even though its legal name is Inländer Rum, a designation the country was allowed to keep as a historic exception within EU spirits regulations.

    Item no.: 22227865416-39-60

The 60% edition is Stroh's answer for those who want the fire in the glass without quite losing their breath. Still red, still Austrian, just made for drinking.

    Expert description

Stroh Original 60% is a Rum from Austria, bottled at 60%, a milder version of the iconic Austrian brand intended for drinks and cocktails rather than pure baking.

Stroh was founded in 1832 by Sebastian Stroh in Klagenfurt and is known for its powerful, red bottles. Where the 80% edition is primarily a kitchen tool, the 60% strength is made to be consumed more directly, in hot drinks like Jagertee and Punsch or in cocktails where Stroh's characteristic caramel and spice profile is wanted without the extreme strength.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Sweet caramel and burnt sugar, more approachable and less sharp than the 80% edition.

    Palate

Warm and sweet with vanilla and dark caramel, with a clear but more subdued alcoholic heat.

    Finish

Round and lingeringly sweet, with a hint of spice.

In Austrian kitchens there is no Sachertorte or Kaiserschmarrn without a dash of Stroh. The red bottle is as Austrian as the Alps themselves.

    Expert description

Stroh Original 80% is a Rum from Austria, bottled at a cask-strength-like 80%, one of Europe's most recognised high-proof spirits for baking and hot drinks.

Stroh was founded in 1832 by Sebastian Stroh in Klagenfurt and has since become an institution in Austrian cooking and bar culture. The iconic red label covers a powerful spirit with a clear rum character, historically categorised under the Austrian designation Inländer Rum. The 80% strength makes it primarily a kitchen workhorse, used for flambéing, Rumkugeln, Sachertorte and punch, while it also features in classic hot drinks like Jagertee.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Intense caramel and burnt sugar, with a warm, almost medicinal sweetness.

    Palate

Powerful and burning sweetness with notes of vanilla and dark caramel, dominated by the high strength.

    Finish

Long and warm, with lingering sweetness and a hint of spice.

About Stroh Rum

Stroh is Austria's best-known spirits brand, a so-called Inländer Rum that technically isn't rum at all, but a strong cane-sugar-based spirit with rum-like character. For newcomers it's a classic, warming dram, perfect for hot punch and mulled wine in winter; for connoisseurs, Stroh is interesting precisely because it challenges the definition of what rum actually is, and has done so for nearly 200 years without changing its fundamental style.

History & Background

Sebastian Stroh founded the distillery in 1832 and developed a cane-sugar-based spirit that would become Austria's most famous spirits export. Because the product doesn't meet the legal definition of rum, it was classified as Inländer Rum, an Austrian specialty that still exists today. Through generations the brand has kept its position as the country's leading spirits name and is today just as tied to Austrian winter culture as skiing and mulled wine.

Production & Style

Stroh is produced in several strength grades, with the most famous variant having a very high alcohol content, making it well suited for cooking and warm drinks.

Signature Style

Intense, Powerful, Caramel-Forward
The taste offers a powerful, intense character with distinct caramel and spice notes.
