There are light, bright rums, and there are rums built to fill a glass with darkness and caramel. Ron Cristobal Black Cask belongs to the latter category, a rum that isn't afraid to taste of its cask.
Expert Description
Ron Cristobal Black Cask Caribbean is a Dominican Rum aged in heavily charred oak casks and bottled at 40%.
The rum comes from the same distillery as the rest of the Ron Cristobal range, Alcoholes Finos Dominicanos in the Dominican Republic, where the house grows its own sugar cane to secure a pure, local raw material. Black Cask uses heavily charred casks, which pull darker, more caramelised notes forward than the house's lighter expressions such as Nina and Pinta.
The name Black Cask refers directly to the heavy charring of the oak, which gives the rum its deep colour and a robust, lightly smoky backbone beneath the otherwise sweet profile.
