There is no chilled bottle here and no finely moulded stopper. There is a jerrycan, a screw cap and a content chosen for what it can pull out of a handful of dried plants. Radius Tinktur was built for the kitchen table, not the display cabinet.

Please note: This item does not come in a glass bottle but in a square 1 litre plastic jerrycan (UN approved) with a 32 mm cap. The content has a very high alcohol strength and must be kept away from children and open flames.

    Expert description

Radius Tinktur Vodka Økologisk 60% is an Organic Danish Vodka from Radius Distillery at Oremandsgaard estate, bottled at 60% in a one litre container.

Radius Distillery sits in the middle of the estate near Præstø in southern Zealand and takes its name from its own working method: raw materials are gathered within the shortest possible radius of the still house. Day to day the house concentrates on gin, aquavit, liqueur and whisky, and the distiller works with the laboratory tape measure in one hand and his nose in the other.

This release is not meant as a sipping vodka. A tincture is an alcohol extraction, and strength decides what comes across. Water pulls out tannins, acids and plant mucilage, while alcohol takes the essential oils, resins and bitter compounds. At 60% you get both at once, which is exactly why so many herbal recipes settle at that level.

The base should keep quiet. It is distilled clean enough that lemon balm tastes of lemon balm rather than of spirit, and the organic certification means no residues travel from the field into the jar. Caraway, sea buckthorn and horsetail are among the plants it is regularly put to work on.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Sharp and clear. Behind the alcohol lies a slender sweetness and a mineral trace, but there is no fusel weight.

    Palate

Burning undiluted. Bring the strength down with water and a mild grain sweetness unfolds, leaving the mouth dry and smooth rather than oily.

    Finish

Short and warm. It clears quickly without leaving an off note, which is the whole point of an extraction base.

Frequently asked questions about Radius Tinktur Vodka Økologisk 60%

    What is a tincture, exactly?

A plant extraction made in alcohol. Herbs are left in spirit for a few weeks, the liquid is strained off, and the soluble compounds stay behind in the alcohol. It is the oldest way of making a plant both concentrated and keepable.

Why 60% rather than ordinary vodka at 40%?

Because extraction power rises with strength. At 40% there is plenty of water for the water-soluble compounds but too little alcohol for resins and essential oils. 60% covers a wider span, and you can always dilute down if a recipe asks for it.

How long should the herbs steep?

Two to six weeks is the usual range. Soft leaves such as lemon balm give up quickly, while roots and bark take the longest. Shake the jar a couple of times a week and keep it dark, and the process runs evenly.

    Can you drink it neat?

Better not. At 60% it is twice the strength of standard vodka and bites noticeably in the mouth and throat. If you want to taste it, dilute with water or ice first.

    Which plants work well?

Caraway, lemon balm, sea buckthorn and horsetail are among the classics. Aromatic seeds and fresh leaves give quick results, while berries and roots demand patience. Only ever use plants you can identify with certainty.

How should the container be stored?

Cool, dark and upright. The plastic jerrycan is UN approved for the purpose but keeps its shape best out of direct sun and heat, and a tight cap stops the alcohol evaporating. Keep it well away from stoves, candles and any other source of ignition.

    Who makes it?

Radius Distillery, a craft distillery in southern Zealand where the distiller trained as a pharmacist. It shows in the approach: things are measured and recorded, and yield is judged as soberly as flavour. To see other houses working at the same level of detail, browse our Vodka brands.
