For centuries the sun-warmed slopes of the Douro have supplied grapes to Quinta do Noval, where the finest casks are blended into a round, golden Tawny. This bottling is the estate's entry point to the style — approachable, yet full of character.

    Expert's Description

Quinta do Noval Tawny Port is a Portuguese Tawny Port from the Douro Valley, aged in oak casks and bottled at 19.5%.

The Tawny style is created by maturing the wine oxidatively in smaller oak casks for several years, during which it slowly loses its red hue in favour of golden and amber tones. The winemaker blends several vintages and casks so the result stays consistent from bottle to bottle, year after year.

Quinta do Noval has stood alone on the north bank of the Douro since 1715 and was rebuilt by António José da Silva in 1894, after phylloxera had devastated the vineyards. Today the estate is one of the most respected in the Douro, known for both its legendary Vintage Ports and more everyday styles such as this one.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose offers dried fig, orange peel and a touch of caramel, lifted by a light nutty note from the cask ageing.

    Palate

The palate is soft and round, with ripe raisin, burnt sugar and a warm spiciness that keeps sweetness and freshness in balance.

    Finish

The finish is medium in length with a faintly bitter nutty note that rounds the wine off neatly.

    Did You Know?

Unlike Ruby Port, which is aged in large, airtight tanks to preserve its fruit, Tawny is deliberately matured in smaller casks that let in a little air year after year — a slow process that gives the wine its characteristic golden-brown colour.

Frequently Asked Questions about Quinta do Noval Tawny Port

What's the difference between this Tawny and a Ruby Port?

Tawny is aged oxidatively in smaller oak casks for several years, developing nutty and caramel notes and a golden-amber hue, while Ruby is shielded from oxygen and keeps its fresh, dark berry fruit.

What does Quinta do Noval Tawny taste like?

It offers dried fig, caramel and raisin, with a round, soft structure and a lightly nutty finish.

Is this bottle a good gift?

Yes, the soft style and the reputation of the house behind it make it a natural gift for both newcomers and seasoned Port drinkers.

At what temperature and in which glass should it be served?

Serve it at 12-14°C in a port glass so the dried fruit and caramel aromas can unfold.

How long does the bottle keep once opened?

Thanks to its oxidative ageing, an opened Tawny stays fresh for several weeks if the cork is replaced and the bottle kept cool.

What defines Quinta do Noval as a wine estate?

The estate has stood on the north bank of the Douro since 1715 and was rebuilt after the phylloxera crisis in 1894, and is known today for both rare Vintage Ports and more accessible styles.

What food pairs well with this Tawny?

It works nicely with nut-based desserts, crème brûlée or a piece of ripe blue cheese.
