Salzburg is known for music, but the city also has coffee houses with heavy curtains and the sound of spoons against porcelain. Mozart Chocolate tastes as if someone poured one of those cups together with a broken piece of Belgian chocolate and let it steep.

    Expert's description

Mozart Chocolate is an Austrian chocolate liqueur with coffee from Mozart Distillerie in Salzburg, made from cocoa beans, Belgian chocolate, cream, and arabica notes, at 17% alcohol.

Mozart Distillerie was founded in Salzburg in 1954 and has since stuck to one discipline: chocolate liqueur. The house works with cocoa beans, Belgian chocolate, and vanilla, and the coffee edition is the one in the range where the roast is allowed to take centre stage. The producer itself calls the mocha note the carrying element.

The coffee isn't layered on top like syrup. It sits inside the chocolate and pulls the sweetness toward the bitter side, which is exactly why the bottle holds its own in an Espresso Martini without help from an extra coffee liqueur. The colour is medium brown with darker reflections, and the texture is creamy without becoming thick.

The liqueur is gluten-free and contains milk products. It has been awarded several times, including gold at the World Spirits Award 2022 and gold at the DLG International Award the same year.

    Taste

The aroma offers freshly roasted coffee beans first, distinct and almost dry. Behind that comes dark cocoa, a touch of vanilla, and a small hint of orange peel. The taste is creamy and bittersweet at once, where the mocha fills the middle, Belgian chocolate sits underneath, and the roast provides the edge. The sweetness is there, but it's never allowed to run wild. The finish is long and roasted – the cream falls away first, leaving a dry cocoa bitterness alongside the warmth of the coffee.

Frequently asked questions about Mozart Chocolate

What does Mozart Chocolate taste like?

Like mocha and dark chocolate in the same mouthful. The coffee comes first and is distinctly roasted, the chocolate sits underneath and gives it body, and the sweetness is kept in check by a bitterness from the cocoa. The texture is creamy, but not heavy.

Should it be drunk neat or in a drink?

Both work. Neat over a couple of ice cubes, it stands best as the close to a meal, where the cold tightens the sweetness. In drinks, it's strongest when coffee and chocolate are allowed to dominate, for example alongside vodka and a shot of espresso.

Is it sweeter than a regular coffee liqueur?

No, if anything it's less sweet. Many coffee liqueurs are built on sugar and coffee extract, while this one has cocoa and cream as a counterweight. The bitterness from the chocolate cuts through the sweetness and makes it easier to drink without a mixer.

Can I use it in desserts?

Yes, and it's one of its best uses. A couple of centilitres over vanilla ice cream, in a tiramisu instead of coffee and liqueur separately, or stirred into a chocolate mousse. The warmth of a dessert lifts the mocha note further.

How do I store an opened bottle?

In the refrigerator. The liqueur contains cream, and although alcohol and sugar act as preservatives, it keeps both flavour and texture best when cold. Put it back after use, and drink it within a few months. See more options among our Cream Liqueur.

Does it contain gluten or milk?

It's gluten-free, but it contains milk products. It's the cream that gives it the creamy texture, so it isn't a choice for guests avoiding lactose.

    Who is behind Mozart Chocolate?

Mozart Distillerie in Salzburg, founded in 1954. The house makes almost exclusively chocolate liqueur and has built its entire range around cocoa from different angles, from dark and cream-free to white, strawberry, and this coffee edition.
