Metaxa 7 Stars is a Greek brandy built on aged grape eaux-de-vie and sweet muscat wines, bottled at 40%.
Like the rest of the family, 7 Stars is not a pure brandy but a blend of grape eaux-de-vie made from grapes including Savatiano and Sultana, aged muscat wines from Samos and Lemnos, and a secret herbal mix – a recipe Spyros Metaxas developed in Piraeus in 1888 and one the house still follows today.
The iconic amphora design many associate with this particular bottle was created by Greek designer Yiannis Tseklenis and draws on the ancient clay vessels once used to carry wine and oil across the Mediterranean. The shape has become one of the most recognisable features of the entire Metaxa family.
With seven stars, the bottle sits in the middle of the house hierarchy and carries a larger share of older eaux-de-vie than 5 Stars, giving it a rounder, fuller character without losing the freshness the house is known for.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Dried apricot and raisin meet a warm caramel note and a hint of muscat – fuller than the younger expression.
Palate
Round and soft, with dark honey, toasted almonds and a gentle spiced warmth that spreads slowly.
Finish
Medium length, with a dry, lightly spiced finish and a last trace of muscat.
