In Amatitán, in the shadow of the Sierra Madre, this Reposado doesn't rest in the usual bourbon barrels. It's been left to mature in barrels that once crossed the Caribbean full of rum - and the result is a sweetness you rarely find in a tequila.

    Expert Description

Mayaciel Reposado Tequila is a Reposado Tequila matured in Caribbean rum barrels and bottled at 43%.

Behind the bottle stands Hacienda de Oro, the Partida family's distillery in the Valle de Tequila near Amatitán. Don Partida founded the distillery in the 1970s, and his recipes and techniques are still used today by the current master distiller, his descendant David Partida. Mayaciel uses only agaves from its own fields, where the blue Weber agaves mature for six to eight years without artificial fertiliser before they're harvested and cooked into tequila a stone's throw from the distillery.

What sets this Reposado apart from almost every other is the choice of barrel. Mayaciel uses only carefully selected rum barrels from the Caribbean for maturation - not the bourbon barrels the industry has otherwise made close to standard. The barrels are thoroughly prepared before the tequila fills them, and the nearly six months on wood give the spirit a layered aroma where the fresh agave still comes through, now joined by the sweetness of rum.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Cooked agave meets a gentle sweetness of vanilla and caramel - soft and inviting from the first breath.

    Palate

Fresh, floral agave mingles with tropical fruit, while the rum's spiced barrel character runs as a quiet undercurrent throughout.

    Finish

Silky and long, without a rough edge - one of the smoothest finishes you'll find in a Reposado.

Frequently Asked Questions about Mayaciel Reposado Tequila

What makes Mayaciel Reposado different from other Reposado tequilas?

It's matured in Caribbean rum barrels instead of the bourbon barrels most Reposado tequilas use. That gives a different kind of sweetness - more tropical fruit and spiced barrel character, less of the classic vanilla-and-caramel tone you'd get from bourbon wood.

What does Mayaciel Reposado taste like?

Cooked agave with a gentle sweetness of vanilla and caramel on the nose, while the palate brings fresh, floral agave, tropical fruit and a touch of spiced barrel character from the rum. The finish is silky and long.

How long has the tequila rested in the barrel?

About half a year - six months in carefully selected rum barrels from the Caribbean.

Is it good to drink neat?

Yes, at room temperature the complex notes of agave, vanilla and caramel unfold best. It also works well as a long drink with a neutral mixer and an orange twist, or in cocktails, where the barrel character adds an extra layer.

    Which glass suits it best?

A small tulip-shaped glass gathers the aromas best if you're drinking it neat. For cocktails, the glass matters less than the ice and mixer.

    Who is behind Mayaciel?

Hacienda de Oro, the Partida family's distillery in the Valle de Tequila near Amatitán. Don Partida founded the distillery in the 1970s, and the same recipes and techniques are still used today.

Is the tequila made from 100% agave?

Yes, exclusively from blue Weber agave grown on the distillery's own fields, where the plants mature for six to eight years without artificial fertiliser before harvest.

How should you store an opened bottle?

Standing up, in the dark, at room temperature. Tequila doesn't develop further in the bottle, but light and heat draw out aroma over time, so a tight-fitting cork matters.
