The south coast of Islay doesn't invite you to linger. Wind cuts sideways off the sea, and somewhere behind the spray, Laphroaig is quietly doing what it's done since 1815.

    Expert's Description

Laphroaig 10 Year Old Cadenhead's Original Collection is an Islay Single Malt Whisky matured in bourbon barrels and bottled at 46%. The release belongs to Cadenhead's Original Collection, a series built from only a handful of casks at a time so the bottler's own reading of the distillery's character comes through, rather than the house style of the official range. This whisky was distilled in 2015 and bottled in August 2026, giving it a full ten years in wood. The barley is peated malt, and roughly a fifth of it is still floor-malted on-site at Laphroaig, a labour-intensive method most distilleries of comparable size gave up decades ago. The peat itself is cut on Islay, and it's what gives the spirit its trademark tarry, iodine-like edge. Distillation runs twice through seven copper pot stills, with an unusually long foreshot on the second run that keeps the heaviest, oiliest notes out of the final spirit. Only bourbon wood is used here, so there's no sherry or finishing cask softening the profile — this is Laphroaig stripped back to peat, brine and distillate character.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Gooseberry and sharp green fruit meet a cool menthol lift, with the tarry, salted smoke Laphroaig is known for sitting underneath.

    Palate

Bold and direct, lime oil and tart Bramley apple cutting through the smoke, while salt and a light iodine bitterness hold it in check.

    Finish

Long and smoky, with a dry, ash-like close where the citrus freshness lingers a while after the last sip.

Frequently Asked Questions about Laphroaig 10 Year Old Cadenhead's Original Collection

What's the difference between this Cadenhead's bottling and the official Laphroaig 10 Year Old?

Cadenhead's is an independent bottler that vats a small handful of casks at a time, rather than following the distillery's standard recipe. Only bourbon casks go into this release, and it's neither chill filtered nor coloured, giving a rawer, more direct read on Laphroaig's character than many of the official expressions.

Why does Laphroaig taste so smoky and medicinal?

It comes down to the peat, which the distillery cuts itself on Islay and uses to dry the barley. Some of that barley is still malted on Laphroaig's own floor maltings, which produces a tarrier, more iodine-driven smoke than malt sourced from industrial maltings.

Should Laphroaig 10 Year Old be drunk with ice or water?

A few drops of water can open the whisky up and soften the smoke, while ice mutes both aroma and flavour significantly and is best avoided if you want the full picture of what's in the glass.

What's the best glass for a peated whisky like this?

A narrow-mouthed glass, such as a Glencairn, concentrates both the smoke and the fresh citrus notes so you get the whole range from the first sniff onward. See our range of whisky glasses.

What is an independent bottler, and why does it matter for the flavour?

An independent bottler like Cadenhead's buys casks directly from distilleries and bottles them under its own name, often without following the house style. It's a way to taste a distillery's character that the official releases simply don't offer.

Is Laphroaig 10 Year Old Cadenhead's worth laying down?

It's an accessible batch release rather than a rare single-cask bottling, so it's first and foremost one to drink. The value here is in the honest, unfiltered production and Cadenhead's standing as Scotland's oldest independent bottler, not in scarcity.
