Deep in the Bavarian Forest, baldmoney and gentian root are picked for this forest-toned gin, bringing the earthiness of the forest floor directly into the glass.

    Expert's description

Granit Bavarian Gin is a German gin from Penninger, bottled at 42%.

The gin is built on as many as 28 different botanicals, including cardamom, coriander and lemon, as well as plants native to the Bavarian Forest such as baldmoney and gentian root.

Among the other botanicals are juniper, ginger, pepper, melissa, liquorice and bearwurz, giving the gin a deep, earthy complexity.

The name Granit references the granite-rich soil of the Bavarian Forest, where many of the wild botanicals grow.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose shows balanced, fresh and mild notes of juniper, coriander and citrus fruits, a subtle peppery sharpness, hints of ginger and earthy herbal notes, along with cool mint and lemon balm.

    Palate

The palate is initially very earthy, spicy and intensely flavoured with Bavarian herbs like gentian and bearwurz, accompanied by juniper, melissa and cardamom, and a touch of pomegranate.

    Finish

The finish is medium-length with subtle juniper, a slight sharpness and fresh citrus, where the bittersweet Bavarian herbs predominate.
