Four glasses on the table, ice in all of them, and one bottle that reaches the whole way round. The large format belongs to the kind of evening where the drink gets topped up as you go and nobody wants to get up for another bottle.

    The expert's description

Fever-Tree Premium Indian Tonic Water x 8 pcs - Perfect for Gin and Tonic 50 cl is a Tonic Water made from carbonated spring water, cane sugar and natural quinine from cinchona bark, supplied as eight bottles of 50 cl.

The half-litre format does a different job from the small bottle. One bottle covers two to three drinks, so eight bottles carry an entire dinner party without anything having to be opened between toasts. This is the format for the table, for the kitchen while dinner is cooking, and for the weekend where Gin and Tonic is the standing answer.

What is inside is what it always is at Fever-Tree: quinine from cinchona bark sourced on the border between the Congo and Rwanda, eight botanical oils layered over it, among them oil from hand-pressed bitter oranges grown in Tanzania. Cane sugar for sweetness, citric acid for tartness. Nothing else.

The bigger bottle brings an advantage you notice at the table: the pour is yours to control. Want the drink dry, add a little less; want it long and light, fill the glass to the brim. At 20 cl a time the ratio is more or less decided in advance, whereas 50 cl lets everyone steer their own glass.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Sharp lemon and bitter orange peel, dry and lifting. A fine herbal undertone from the bark sits beneath it and only shows once the glass has stood still for a moment.

    Palate

The sweetness is brief and gives way quickly to quinine, which spreads dry across the tongue. Citrus oils keep the middle sharp, and the carbonation bites firmly without prickling uncomfortably.

    Finish

Clean and bitter, with a trace of dried citrus peel. No sugary film stays behind, which keeps the third glass as drinkable as the first.

    Did you know?

The Indian in the name points to British India. Officers and officials had to take quinine against malaria, and because the raw bark tasted appalling it was mixed with water, sugar and a measure of gin. The Gin and Tonic began life as a way of making medicine drinkable.

Frequently asked questions about Fever-Tree Premium Indian Tonic Water x 8 pcs - Perfect for Gin and Tonic 50 cl

How many drinks does a 50 cl bottle make?

Two to three, depending on how long you like the drink. With 4 cl of gin and 15 cl of tonic you get three tight glasses; fill the glass right up with 20 to 25 cl of tonic and the bottle covers two. Eight bottles therefore see a dinner party of 6 to 8 people through a couple of rounds.

Why choose 50 cl over small bottles?

Because you decide how much goes in the glass. The large bottle makes topping up easy and lets the strength vary from glass to glass, with fewer caps and less packaging to clear away afterwards. At the table, one bottle per round is also more practical than four small ones.

Can you batch a whole jug of Gin and Tonic in advance?

Not with the tonic in it. The carbonation escapes in the jug and the drink is flat before it reaches the glass. Batch the gin and fresh citrus instead, keep the mix ice cold, and top up with tonic in the individual glass just before serving.

    Which glass suits it best?

A large balloon glass or a tall glass with a heavy base. Both leave room for the pile of ice that keeps the carbonation alive, and the wide balloon also gathers the aroma of the citrus peel above the surface. A small glass turns warm quickly.

What separates Indian Tonic Water from the other tonic styles?

Indian Tonic Water is the classic, most neutral version, built on quinine and citrus. Styles such as Mediterranean or Elderflower add floral or herbal tones that take up more room in the glass. If the gin's own botanicals are meant to lead, Indian is the safest route. Browse the full selection of Gin.

How do I hit the same drink every time?

Measure the gin with a jigger and stick to one ratio. A Gin and Tonic at 1 to 4 is the starting point, so 4 cl of gin to 16 cl of tonic. Once the quantities stay fixed you can taste the difference between gins instead of guessing what happened in the glass.

Can the tonic be used in cooking or in alcohol-free drinks?

Yes, that bitter edge earns its keep in both. Tonic with a dash of bitters, plenty of ice and a grapefruit peel makes a grown-up alcohol-free drink, and in the kitchen it works as the liquid in a tempura batter, where the carbonation keeps the coating light and crisp.
