Four years in a French oak cask that once held red wine gave this aquavit a sweetness and depth rarely found in Danish snaps.
The Expert's Description
Fary Lochan Fadlagret Aquavit Danish Snaps is a Danish aquavit from the distillery in Farre near Give, bottled at 42% ABV.
Like the distillery's other cask-aged snaps, this one starts as Fary Lochan's fresh nettle snaps. But the path here is different: the cask is French oak that previously held red wine, and a full 4 years in this cask gives the aquavit a pronounced sweetness and a unique character that still recalls whisky, but in its own particular way.
The result is a softer, sweeter cask-aged snaps than the distillery's Laphroaig-aged version – two different roads to the same destination: showing what time in a cask can do to a simple nettle snaps.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Sweet and round, with notes of red wine, dark berries and a hint of French oak.
Palate
Soft and full-bodied, where the red wine cask's sweetness meets the nettle's green base and a light vanilla from the oak.
Finish
Medium length and sweet, with a warm, faintly wine-like finish that fades slowly.

Did You Know?
While the distillery's other cask-aged snaps matures in a used Laphroaig cask, this version rests a full 4 years in French oak that once held red wine – twice as long, but a completely different result.
