High above Atotonilco el Alto, rows of blue Weber agave grow slowly in volcanic soil. From these fields comes Don Julio Anejo — a tequila built not for fire, but for caramel, honey and a quiet touch of citrus. It is made to be sipped, not shot.

    Expert Description

Don Julio Anejo is a Mexican Anejo Tequila made from 100% Blue Weber agave and aged in American oak barrels for at least 18 months at 38% ABV.

The tequila carries the name of Don Julio González, who at just 17 years old in 1942 borrowed money to take over a distillery in Atotonilco el Alto, Jalisco. He insisted on quality over volume and planted his own agave fields long before that was standard practice — an approach still shaping every Don Julio tequila today. The Anejo expression rests in American oak barrels previously used for bourbon, giving it a deep, rounded character and making it one of the world’s best-selling 100% agave Anejo tequilas.

What does Don Julio Anejo taste like?

It offers a full-bodied palate of cooked agave, wild honey and oak-infused butterscotch, with a fresh citrus nose and a lightly spiced, honeyed finish.

What does "Anejo" mean on a tequila?

Anejo means "aged" and covers tequila that, by Mexican law, rests for at least one year in oak barrels. Don Julio Anejo rests even longer — at least 18 months — giving it its deep, rounded character.

How should Don Julio Anejo be served?

Try it in a snifter at room temperature, letting the aromas fully open up, or on the rocks. It also works beautifully in an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan.

Who was the man behind the name Don Julio?

Don Julio González founded his first distillery in Atotonilco el Alto at just 17 years old in 1942. He chose quality over volume and planted his own agave fields, a philosophy that still shapes every Don Julio tequila today.

Is Don Julio Anejo made from 100% agave?

Yes, it is distilled entirely from Blue Weber agave with no added sugar cane spirit, giving it a cleaner, more complex flavour than a Mixto tequila.

Can Don Julio Anejo be used in a Paloma?

It’s mainly made for sipping alone or in darker cocktails, though a Paloma is traditionally made with a Blanco tequila. Listen to our podcast about Don Julio and World Paloma Day for more inspiration.

Is Don Julio Anejo a good gift?

Yes, its respected name and rounded flavour make it a safe choice for both the seasoned tequila drinker and the curious recipient.
