Do you know the Lady of the Glen? We do - Whisky bloggers Mads & Kristian

Blog post about the independent whisky merchant 'Lady of The Glen' - our Whisky bloggers Mads & Kristian have delved into the story behind the project.

Posts by Mads Thorup and Kristian Henriksen Lady of the Glen is an independent bottler that buys rare and specially selected single cask barrels from independent distilleries across most of Scotland. They try to make a point of paying homage to the long and ancient tradition of independent whisky bottling in Scotland. The name "Lady of the Glen" comes from the idea that the brand should embody the essence of Scotland and is a tribute to the green lady ghost that is said to roam around Stirling Castle. The logo that adorns the bottles today tries to capture the purple color of the Scottish wildflower. Lady of the Glen hand bottles all their whiskies and bottles at cask strength without the whisky being cold filtered, which means you get the very raw whisky as it has developed in the barrels. This also means that most whiskies from here are above 50% alcohol by volume. This way, all the original flavor is retained and you get a whisky that is unique every time. As unique as each cask is, each bottle that is bottled is just as special, as each bottle has a handwritten bottle number. This makes each bottle as special and unique as the whisky it contains.
The owner and director of Lady of The Glen is Gregor Hannah, who developed a passion for whisky at a very young age and at the age of 25, he started his independent rare single cask business under the name Lady of the Glen. Gregor's passion and understanding of whisky came through his father, who was awarded whisky bottles as a reward for bagpipe performances at various events. Over time, Gregor's father amassed a large collection of whiskies of different colors, shapes and labels from all over Scotland, and it was this that gave Gregor a keen interest and understanding of Scotch whisky. Gregor's knowledge of independent bottling came from working in a bar where he gained the knowledge and history of independent bottling, which led him to start Lady of The Glen, which was launched in December 2012. To ensure the whisky's unique flavour and balance, wine and spirit casks from around the world are used, and Lady of The Glen sources casks from bodegas in Portugal, local wineries in Italy and France. The casks come primarily from family-owned businesses, which gives insight into the origin of the cask, as well as the wine or spirit that has been aged in the cask before. This helps to ensure the quality of the product that Lady of The Glen offers.
