In Schiavon near Bassano del Grappa, in the heart of Veneto, the Poli family has distilled since 1898. This brandy is the house's take on what happens when grappa craftsmanship turns its attention to wine instead of pomace.
Expert's Description
Brandy Italiano Di Poli is an Italian Brandy, bottled at 40%.
The distillery was founded in 1898 by GioBatta Poli, who started with a mobile still and produced grappa from local pomace for the region's winemakers. Today the house is run by the fourth generation, siblings Jacopo, Andrea and Barbara Poli, who still distil on an old copper alembic.
This brandy is made from wine of the Trebbiano grape from the Soave area, setting it apart from the house's well-known grappas, which are distilled from pomace. The spirit is aged for a full 10 years, partly in Slovenian oak casks and partly in French Allier and Limousin casks.
The long, varied cask ageing gives the brandy an aristocratic warmth and a dark glow that sets it apart from many younger Italian brandies.

Did You Know?
The Poli family's story did not begin with a still, but with a tavern at Schiavon's train station in 1885, where GioBatta Poli sold wine, beer and straw hats, thirteen years before he turned his attention to the art of distillation.
