On the steep, schist-covered slopes along the Douro River, even organic farming is a physical struggle - here the vines have no artificial help to lean on.

    Expert's Description

Dalva Pure Tawny Reserve Organic is a Portuguese Tawny Reserve Port made from organically grown grapes, bottled at 19%.

The wine is a Reserve, meaning it is a carefully composed blend of several casks of differing ages, with the overall result equating to roughly seven years of oak ageing - longer than a standard Tawny, but without the named vintage year of a Colheita.

What sets this bottle apart is that the grapes are certified organically grown - a rarity in the Douro Valley, where the terraced, schist-heavy slopes make mechanisation and conventional spraying difficult, but which in turn makes organic farming a natural choice for the growers who take that path.

Dalva is the Port brand of the house C. da Silva, founded in Vila Nova de Gaia in 1933 by Clemente da Silva. With the Pure range, the house has extended its classic Tawny production to include a certified organic line as well.

    Did You Know?

The Douro Valley's schist soil and steep terraces make organic viticulture considerably harder than in most other wine regions, since neither fieldwork nor pest control can be mechanised to the same degree - making a certified organic Port a more demanding undertaking than the label first suggests.
