Thirty years is a long time for a person - for a Tawny in cask, it's the point where the wine stops trying to be anything but itself.

    Expert's Description

Dalva 30 Year Old Tawny is a Portuguese Aged Tawny Port with an average age of 30 years, bottled at 20%.

The age statement reflects the average age of the many casks in the final blend, a method overseen by Portugal's wine authority, the IVDP - after three decades in oak the wine has taken on a warm, brick-red colour and an intensity only a handful of casks ever reach.

The wine is based on a traditional Douro field blend, including Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz, where the long, oxidative ageing has concentrated the flavour considerably and created a depth that sets it clearly apart from the younger Tawny expressions.

Dalva is the Port brand of the house C. da Silva, founded in Vila Nova de Gaia in 1933, and the 30-year expression represents one of the house's most prestigious Tawny categories.

    Investment Potential

A Tawny with an average of 30 years in cask belongs to a rare and sought-after category, where available quantities are limited and many casks never reach a point where they can carry such a high age statement.

    Did You Know?

Behind a 30-year blend there can be casks that are in reality far older than the 30 years on the label - the age statement is an average, meaning some of the oldest components may date back decades no one remembers precisely.
