Caramel and salt are old companions, but they rarely end up in a shot glass. Bornholm Spirits took their own vodka, stirred salted caramel into it and bottled the result at a strength where the sweetness does not get burned away.

    Expert description

Bornholm Spirits Salty Caramel is a Danish Vodka Liqueur built on Vodka Bornholm and salted caramel, bottled at 16.4%.

It belongs to the Shots by Vodka Bornholm range, where the base is the distillery’s own vodka rather than bought-in neutral spirit. That vodka has rested with Bornholm granite, and the softness is why the caramel can settle on top without running into anything sharp.

The salt is what saves it. Without it the caramel would turn cloying after two sips. With it the sweetness gets a counterweight, and the shot closes dry instead of syrupy.

It has to be served ice cold. At room temperature it turns heavy, while cold tightens it up and makes the caramel into something you want to reach for again.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Melted caramel and butter. Behind them sit a thread of vanilla and a small salted breath.

    Palate

Creamy and full with clear caramel. The salt arrives late and pulls the sweetness back before it becomes too much.

    Finish

Medium. Toffee and cream fade out, and the salt is left standing on its own.

    Did you know?

Salted caramel as we know it today was developed in Brittany in the 1970s by chocolatier Henri Le Roux, who used the salted butter of the region. From there it spread across the world.

Frequently asked questions about Bornholm Spirits Salty Caramel

    How sweet is it?

Clearly sweet, but not cloying. The caramel fills the middle and the salt steps in to pull the sweetness back before it goes too far. Served ice cold it reads noticeably less sweet than at room temperature.

    How strong is it?

At 16.4% it sits well below a standard vodka and closer to a liqueur. The low strength means the alcohol never cuts through the caramel, and a shot goes down without burning.

    How should it be served?

Ice cold from the freezer in a small shot glass. Cold makes it tighter and fresher, where room temperature leaves it feeling heavy and thick. Keep the bottle in the freezer between rounds.

Can it be used in coffee or desserts?

Yes, and that is one of its best roles. A splash in hot coffee under whipped cream, over vanilla ice cream or in a cold coffee cocktail. It can also supply the sweetness in a drink where you would otherwise reach for syrup.

    What is the base?

The distillery own vodka, the same one that has rested with Bornholm granite. That soft floor is why the caramel can settle on top without meeting sharp edges. Find the unflavoured version in our range of Vodka Bornholm.

How long does an open bottle last?

A long time. Sugar and alcohol preserve it, so the flavour changes only slowly. Store it cold and dark and the caramel keeps its freshness instead of turning flat.

What else does Bornholm Spirits make?

Organic schnapps, aquavit and vodka from Den Bornholmske Spritfabrik in Nexø. The shot range is the most playful corner of the house, while the rest of the portfolio sticks to Nordic ingredients and classic styles.
