Bladnoch 13 Years is a Single Lowland Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 40%.

Bladnoch was founded in 1817 and is Scotland's southernmost distillery. The site has closed and reopened several times over its history, which makes older bottlings scarce, and the style has always been the light, floral Lowland profile rather than peat and sherry.

Thirteen years is an unusual age statement and longer maturation than Lowland malt normally receives. The extra time gives the whisky more body without losing the freshness the region is known for.

Tasting notes

Nose

Pale flowers and fresh cut grass, with lemon peel, pear and a light grainy sweetness.

Palate

Soft and clean with vanilla, honey and pale grain. The cask keeps to the background and lets the spirit lead.

Finish

Medium and dry with a touch of oak and a last fresh citrus note.

What characterises Lowland whisky?

Lighter body, floral and grassy notes and almost never peat smoke. The region historically used triple distillation, which gives a cleaner and milder spirit than in the Highlands.

Is it peated?

No. Bladnoch works with unpeated malt, and there is no peat in this expression. If you are after smoke, look towards Islay Whisky instead.

Is it a good choice for someone new to whisky?

Yes. 40% and a mild, floral profile make it easy to approach, with no sharp edges to get used to. It also works well as a first single malt after a blend.

Why is Bladnoch from earlier decades so rarely seen?

Because the distillery has been closed for several periods, most recently from 2009 to 2015. Whisky simply was not produced in all those years, and that limits the supply of older bottlings.

How is it best served?

Neat and at room temperature in a tulip shaped glass. The whisky is delicate enough that ice noticeably mutes the floral notes — a single drop of water is a better idea.

What does it pair with?

White meat, shellfish and fresh goat's cheese. It is too light for heavy, smoked food, but it works well as an aperitif before a meal.
