Absolut is a Swedish Vodka made from winter wheat grown at Åhus and bottled at 40% in a 5 cl bottle.

Every single drop of Absolut comes from the same place. The wheat is grown around Åhus in southern Sweden, sown in autumn and harvested the following year, and the water is drawn from a deep local well. Distillation runs continuously rather than in batches, a method Lars Olsson Smith developed in the nineteenth century and which earned him the nickname Brännvinskungen, the vodka king.

He launched Absolut Rent Brännvin in 1879. A hundred years later, in 1979, the brand was relaunched internationally in the bottle we know today — drawn from an old Swedish apothecary flask, without a paper label and with the text printed directly into the glass. The miniature is that same bottle in small format.

Tasting notes

Nose

Clean and lightly bready. There is a fine grain character and otherwise very little to hold on to, which is the intention.

Palate

Soft and dry with a discreet grain sweetness. The alcohol registers as warmth rather than as sharpness.

Finish

Short and clean. It releases quickly and leaves no bitterness behind.

Did you know?

Lars Olsson Smith was known as Brännvinskungen, the vodka king. He took on the Stockholm spirits monopoly by selling his brännvin from Reimersholme, outside the city customs line, and ferried people out there so they could buy around the system. That business laid the foundation for Absolut.

Is the liquid the same as in the full size bottle?

Yes. This is the classic clear Absolut at 40%, made from winter wheat grown at Åhus. Only the volume differs. The miniature is a neat way to taste it properly if you normally only meet Absolut inside a mixed drink.

How much is 5 cl?

Roughly two shots, or enough for a single mixed drink. For a Vodka Tonic the bottle stretches to one glass with a little to spare. Used in a tasting, you can split it into three or four small pours.

What does continuous distillation mean?

That the spirit is not distilled in batches but runs in an unbroken circuit through the column. The method produces a very clean spirit with little variation from batch to batch, and that consistency is exactly what Absolut builds its range on.

What is a miniature bottle good for?

Travel, gift hampers, advent calendars and cocktail kits. It takes up no space in hand luggage, it is easy to give as a small greeting, and it is practical when a recipe needs vodka and you would rather not open a full bottle.

How is it best enjoyed?

Why does the bottle have no label?

Because the text is printed straight onto the glass. That was part of the design decision in 1979, when the shape of the bottle itself was meant to carry the identity. The result is a bottle as recognisable in silhouette as in lettering.

Is any sugar added?

No. The clear Absolut is straight vodka made from wheat and water with no added sugar and no flavouring. The soft impression comes from the wheat and from the distillation, not from anything poured in afterwards.
