There's something about a pharmacy on a tropical island that never quite lets go. St. Thomas, the 1800s – the sun beating down over Charlotte Amalie harbour, while behind the counter a Danish pharmacist mixes sugar cane spirit into his tinctures. That's where the story of A.H. Riise begins, long before anyone called it rum.

    Expert's Description

A.H. Riise XO Reserve Superior Cask is a rum-based Spirit Drink from the US Virgin Islands, finished in casks that previously held port and sherry wine, and bottled at 40%. The bottle belongs to the brand's standing XO Reserve range and sits alongside its sibling, Port Cask XO Reserve, though it's a touch gentler in strength and built from a wider spread of Caribbean and Central American rum stocks. There's no age statement on the label — instead, it's the blending of younger and older rum stocks that does the work.

The brand behind the bottle is today United Spirits Brands, who in 2025 gave the whole range a new name: Old St. Croix. The heart of it hasn't changed. Distillates from several Caribbean and Central American distilleries are blended, then rested in casks that once held port or sherry wine. That cask choice adds roundness and a light sweetness, tying the different rum stocks together into something that feels like one whole rather than a collection of parts.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose opens gently with toasted coconut and dried figs, with a hint of flambéed banana lurking just behind – sweet and lightly scorched at once.

    Palate

On the palate it's soft and round, toffee and cigar box up front, while a mild note of candied mandarin cuts through and keeps it fresh.

    Finish

The finish is long and leathery, with a touch of cocoa that lingers well after the last sip.

    Did You Know?

In 2025, A.H. Riise changed its name to Old St. Croix – actually a return to the name the bottle already carried back in 1880, when pharmacist Albert Heinrich Riise exported his rum under his own signature as a personal mark of quality. Old bottles carrying the A.H. Riise name are still out there in shops alongside the new ones – it's the same rum hiding behind both names.

Frequently Asked Questions about A.H. Riise XO Reserve Superior Cask

What does A.H. Riise XO Reserve Superior Cask taste like?

It offers a soft, round taste with toasted coconut and figs on the nose, cigar box and caramelised mandarin on the palate, and a long finish of leather and cocoa. It's a rum-based spirit built to be full without being heavy.

What makes A.H. Riise XO Reserve Superior Cask different from other rum-based spirits?

It's blended from several Caribbean and Central American rum stocks and finished in casks that once held port or sherry wine. That combination of multiple origins and a double cask finish is what gives it its round, layered character, without leaning on a single distillery style.

Is A.H. Riise XO Reserve Superior Cask a good gift?

Yes, it works well as a gift for both the curious newcomer and the more experienced rum drinker. The bottle carries over 180 years of history from the Danish West Indies, which makes for a good story to hand over along with the bottle itself.

How should A.H. Riise XO Reserve Superior Cask be served?

Best at room temperature in a tulip glass, so the aromas can open up. If you prefer it cold, a single ice cube won't hurt its character.

Can A.H. Riise XO Reserve Superior Cask be used in cocktails?

Yes, its round and lightly sweet profile suits classic rum cocktails like a Dark 'n' Stormy or a simple Old Fashioned twist, where the cask notes get to carry the drink.

How should the bottle be stored after opening?

Standing upright, somewhere cool and away from direct sunlight, with the cork pushed in firmly. That way it holds its flavour for a long time, even after the bottle's been opened.

Why is the bottle still called A.H. Riise when the brand recently changed its name to Old St. Croix?

Because the switch to Old St. Croix only rolled out in 2025, and plenty of bottles carrying the original A.H. Riise name are still sitting on shelves. The contents haven't changed – only the name on the label has had a bit of a historic revival.
