Local Barley is Springbank's tribute to the ground the whisky comes from - barley grown right in the Campbeltown area, rather than the standardised grain most distilleries use.

    Expert Description

Springbank Local Barley 10 Year Old 2022 Edition is a Campbeltown Single Malt Scotch Whisky distilled from locally grown barley and bottled at full cask strength, 51.6%.

The Local Barley range is one of Springbank's most sought-after, because it uses barley grown specifically in the area surrounding Campbeltown, unlike the distillery's standard releases. Only a very limited quantity has reached the Danish market, and the whisky is bottled without filtration or added colour, so everything the ground and the cask have given it remains in the glass.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Fresh barley and a light earthiness meet a sweetness of honey and ripe apples, with a hint of sea salt behind it.

    Palate

Bold and cereal-driven, with notes of caramel and a lightly oily structure that carries the high strength well.

    Finish

Long and lightly spiced, with a lingering sweetness that slowly gives way to a dry, salty close.

Frequently Asked Questions about Springbank Local Barley 10 Year Old 2022

What makes Local Barley different from Springbank's other releases?

The range is distilled from barley grown specifically in the Campbeltown area, rather than the standardised grain the distillery normally uses.

Is Springbank Local Barley 10 Year Old worth it?

Yes - the limited bottle count and the local barley sourcing make the range one of the most sought-after among Springbank collectors.

Is Local Barley bottled at cask strength?

Yes, this edition is bottled at 51.6% without the addition of water, preserving the full intensity from the casks.

Should water be added to Springbank Local Barley?

It can help, as the cask strength is high - a few drops of water can open up the finer honey and apple notes.

Which glass suits Springbank Local Barley best?

A Glencairn whisky glass gathers the barley character and the light sweetness.

Why does terroir matter for whisky?

The origin of the barley can subtly influence flavour through soil and climate, much as it does for wine - the Local Barley range is Springbank's way of exploring exactly that.
