Skærsøgaard Brandy

On the very same Jutland farm where the grain for whisky is grown, an apple brandy is also distilled, apple by apple, from the farm's own harvest. Skærsøgaard proves that a small farm distillery can easily master two very different crafts under one roof.

    Item no.: 22227865491-1102

On the slopes at Dons, near Kolding, Sven Moesgaard planted his first 4,000 vines in 1998. What began as Denmark's first authorised vineyard has since made room for something far rarer in a Danish context: a brandy distilled from its own grapes and bottled at full cask strength.

    Expert's Description

Skærsøgaard 2007 Cask Strength is a Danish Brandy distilled from Danish grapes, bottled at 62%.

In 2000, Skærsøgaard Vin became the first Danish vineyard with EU approval, and since 2006 it has, alongside wine, also produced its own spirits and fruit wines across its 5.5 hectares. This brandy comes from the 2007 vintage and is distilled from Skærsøgaard's own grapes, grown in the long Jutland summer light which, according to the vineyard, gives the grapes a slow, aromatic ripening.

The spirit has matured for 8 years in oak casks and is bottled without dilution, at full cask strength – a style that shows the distillate completely unfiltered, with all the intensity it has built up in the cask.

As a Limited Edition, this 2007 vintage offers a rare glimpse of what Danish terroir can produce when distilled rather than turned into wine.

About Skærsøgaard

Skærsøgaard is the name Danish whisky enthusiasts know from the small farm distillery near Give, but the farm also distils a fruit brandy from its own harvest, apple by apple. For newcomers it's a full-bodied, apple-sweet brandy showing Danish farm craft from a different angle than the whisky; for collectors it's notable that the entire process, from growing apples to distilling and ageing, happens on the same land, giving Skærsøgaard Brandy a rare, unbroken farm-to-bottle story.

History & Background

Skærsøgaard was established as a farm distillery in central Jutland, where the farm grew its own grain for whisky from the start. Alongside the whisky, the farm has long also made a Danish fruit brandy, distilled from apples off its own and local orchards, in a style that draws on the French calvados tradition, but with Jutland soil under the trees.

Production & Style

The apples are pressed and fermented into a cider, which is then distilled in traditional copper pot stills. The brandy matures in oak casks, often former whisky casks from the farm's own production.

Signature Style

Apple-Fresh, Round, Lightly Spiced
Expect ripe apples, a touch of honey, and a light, spiced finish from the oak.
