An oak-aged Chardonnay with notes of vanilla and butter is a completely different experience from the leaner, steel-fermented version. It deserves a glass that gives room to that broad, creamy structure, rather than sitting forgotten in the cupboard.

    The Expert's Description

Riedel Wine Tumbler O Oaked Chardonnay 0414/97 is a white wine glass in crystal glass from the Austrian glassmaker Riedel, shaped without a stem for full-bodied, oak-aged Chardonnay styles.

The glass is part of The O range, where Riedel took the bowl shape from its classic stemmed glasses and built it directly onto a solid base. The wide, rounded shape gives the creamy, oak-influenced Chardonnay plenty of room to develop its notes of vanilla, butter and toast, without them getting lost in the alcohol.

    Design & Materials

The bowl is wider and rounder than the glasses for the leaner white wines in the range, which suits the body found in an oak-aged Chardonnay well. The glass is machine-blown in crystal glass and stemless, making it sturdy enough for everyday use without extra thought.

    Use & Recommendation

The glass is designed for full-bodied, oak-aged white wines, where both fruit and the characteristic oak notes need room. It is dishwasher safe, so it works just as well for an everyday dinner as for a larger gathering.

    Did You Know?

It's the time spent in oak barrels that gives "oaked" Chardonnay its characteristic notes of vanilla, butter and toast – unlike the leaner, more citrus-driven style you get when the wine is aged only in steel tank.
