Cognac is traditionally drunk from a heavy, round snifter, warmed in the palm of the hand. Riedel Vinum Cognac Hennessy takes a different route - a tall, elegant bowl that still lets the spirit breathe, without asking you to sit there warming the glass by hand.

    The Expert's Description

Riedel Vinum Cognac Hennessy is a machine-blown Crystal Glass from the Austrian glassmaking house Riedel, designed specifically for cognac and other aged brandy.

The glass belongs to the Vinum line, which Georg J. Riedel drew up in 1986 to make varietal-specific glassware available to everyday consumers. Cognac is technically a wine-based spirit, double-distilled from wine grown in the Cognac region of France, which makes it a natural fit for Riedel to include a cognac shape in a line otherwise built around wine glasses.

    Design & Material

The bowl is tall and wide enough to give the cognac air, but the rim narrows so the strong alcohol vapours are tamed before the aroma reaches the nose - something between a wine glass and the classic snifter.

    Use & Recommendation

Use the glass for cognac, armagnac and other aged brandy, where you want the caramel and oak notes to come through without drowning in alcohol fumes. It is dishwasher safe and can go straight into the dishwasher.

    Did You Know?

Cognac is legally a brandy, but it starts life as a wine from the defined Cognac area of France, before being distilled twice and aged in oak barrels. The name of this glass is a nod to that renowned French cognac house, whose style inspired the shape.

Frequently Asked Questions about Riedel Vinum Cognac Hennessy

Why doesn't Riedel just use a classic snifter for cognac?

Vinum Cognac Hennessy has a taller, more wine-glass-like bowl that still gives the spirit air, but without requiring you to warm the glass in your hand like a traditional snifter.

Can the glass also be used for whisky or armagnac?

Yes, the glass works well for other aged spirits such as armagnac and certain whiskies, where you want the sweet, oaky notes to come through.

Can the glass go in the dishwasher?

Yes, the glass is dishwasher safe like the rest of the Vinum line.

How much cognac should I pour into the glass?

A small pour, typically 2-4 cl, is enough for the aromas to unfold without filling the whole bowl.

Can I find cognac to go with the glass at your store?

Yes, see our Cognac selection if you need the bottle itself.

Where can I see the rest of Riedel's glassware?

You will find the whole range in our Riedel Glassware selection.
