Chardonnay is the grape that can do almost anything - buttery and rich with oak, or lean and mineral like an unoaked Chablis. Riedel Vinum Chardonnay / Chablis is drawn to hold both extremes in the same glass.

    The Expert's Description

Riedel Vinum Chardonnay / Chablis is a machine-blown White Wine Glass in Crystal Glass from the Austrian glassmaking house Riedel, designed for both full-bodied, oak-aged whites and leaner, unoaked styles such as Chablis.

The glass belongs to the Vinum line, which Georg J. Riedel drew up in 1986 to turn varietal-specific glassware into an everyday item rather than a restaurant luxury. The bowl is wider than most white wine glasses precisely because it has to handle both a rich, buttery Chardonnay and a lean, tangy Chablis without one style drowning out the other.

    Design & Material

The wide bowl gives an oak-aged Chardonnay's buttery, vanilla notes room to unfold, while the slightly narrower rim keeps the aroma focused, so a young, unoaked Chablis still comes across fresh and precise.

    Use & Recommendation

Use the glass for rich, oak-aged whites from Burgundy, California or Australia, but also for leaner, unoaked Chardonnay styles such as Chablis or Petit Chablis. It's dishwasher safe, so it can go straight into the dishwasher after use.

    Did You Know?

Chardonnay is often called the 'winemaker's grape', because it changes character depending on whether it's left on the lees, fermented in oak or kept steel-cool with no oak at all - which makes it one of the hardest grapes to match with a single glass design.

Frequently Asked Questions about Riedel Vinum Chardonnay / Chablis

What makes the shape suited to both Chardonnay and Chablis?

The wide bowl lets an oak-aged Chardonnay's buttery notes unfold, while the slightly narrower rim keeps the aroma focused, so a lean, unoaked Chablis still comes across fresh.

Can the glass be used for other white wines?

Yes, it also works well for other full-bodied or aromatic whites such as Viognier or a riper style of Sauvignon Blanc.

Can the glass go in the dishwasher?

Yes, the glass is dishwasher safe, like the rest of the Vinum line, which is built for everyday use.

Why are Chardonnay and Chablis named together on this glass?

They come from the same grape, but two very different styles. The glass is built to cover the range from rich and oak-aged to lean and mineral.

Where can I see the rest of Riedel's glassware?

You will find the whole range in our Riedel Glassware selection, with a shape for almost every wine style.
