The slender flute has become the champagne standard, but it was actually built to hold onto the bubbles, not to show off the aroma. Riedel Vinum Champagne breaks with that habit and borrows its shape from a wine glass instead.

    The Expert's Description

Riedel Vinum Champagne is a machine-blown Champagne Glass in Crystal Glass from the Austrian glassmaking house Riedel, designed to bring out the aromas in champagne and other quality sparkling wine.

The glass belongs to the Vinum line, which Georg J. Riedel drew up in 1986. Instead of the traditional narrow flute, the champagne glass got a wider, more wine-glass-like bowl, so the aroma can unfold the same way it does in a proper wine glass. If you still need the bottle itself, browse our range of Champagne & Sparkling Wine.

    Design & Material

The oval bowl is wider than a classic flute, but the rim is still narrow enough to hold onto some of the fizz. The Crystal Glass is machine-blown with the same thin rim known from the rest of the Vinum line.

    Use & Recommendation

Use the glass for vintage champagne and other quality sparkling wines, where you want more of the aroma to come through, not just the sight of rising bubbles. It is dishwasher safe and can go straight into the dishwasher.

    Did You Know?

The classic flute was originally shaped to preserve carbonation for as long as possible, not to show off the wine's aroma. Riedel Vinum Champagne trades a bit of that bubble longevity for a wider bowl that carries far more of the aroma into every sip.

Frequently Asked Questions about Riedel Vinum Champagne

Why isn't the glass shaped like a classic flute?

The shape borrows from Riedel's wine glasses, because a wider bowl gives champagne's aroma more room to unfold, unlike the narrow flute, which is mainly built to hold onto the bubbles.

Doesn't the champagne lose its fizz faster in this glass?

The bubbles last a bit shorter than in a deep flute, but in return you get noticeably more of the aroma, a trade most champagne lovers consider worth making.

Can the glass be used for other sparkling wines?

Yes, it works well for cava, crémant and other quality sparkling wines, not just French champagne.

Can the glass go in the dishwasher?

Yes, the glass is dishwasher safe like the rest of the Vinum line.

Do you also sell the champagne this glass is meant for?

Yes, take a look at our Champagne & Sparkling Wine selection if you need the bottle itself.

Where can I see the rest of Riedel's glassware?

You will find the whole range in our Riedel Glassware selection.
