Poli Barrique Cleopatra Amarone Oro Grappa Italy 70 cl 40%

There is something almost archetypal about grappa that carries the scent of red grapes and dark oak casks — but Poli Cleopatra Amarone Oro is far from ordinary. This is a grappa that begins with Amarone, one of Italy’s most serious wines, and builds from there.

Poli Distillerie has been located in Schiavon near Bassano del Grappa in Veneto since 1898. Here, in what is considered Italy’s most important grappa region, the Poli family still works with discontinuous distillation — a method that takes time and attention but preserves delicate aromas in a way faster techniques cannot. The Cleopatra series is the family’s most ambitious line, named after the Egyptian alchemist Cleopatra, who according to legend invented the first distillation column in history — the Crysopea.

Cleopatra Amarone Oro is made from the fresh pomace of Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara — the grape varieties that give Amarone della Valpolicella its deep, wine‑rich character. This pomace is distilled in Poli’s newly developed Crysopea column, a bain‑marie vacuum still operating at low pressure and therefore lower temperature. This preserves more floral and fruity notes and produces fewer unwanted by‑products. The grappa is then aged in small French oak barriques in the distillery’s underground cellars — resulting in a spirit with golden‑amber colour and a structure more reminiscent of a well‑aged cognac than a sharp marc spirit.

Nose: Dried fruit and almonds — raisins, dates, a touch of walnut. Vanilla and cocoa from the oak, and a light note of freshly toasted wood chips.
Palate: Soft and full‑bodied. Dark cherries, figs and spices. Broad structure with a fine balance between fruit and wood.
Finish: Long and warm. A hint of licorice, a touch of dark chocolate, and a dry, elegant finish that lingers.

Flavour profile: Sherried · Fruity · Spicy · Oaky · Creamy

Did you know? The Crysopea distillation column used for the Cleopatra series took five years to develop. Poli created it in collaboration with the Experimental Centre at the San Michele all’Adige Institute, beginning in 2003. It is one of the only bain‑marie vacuum columns in active production today.
