Ncnean blog post - by Whisky blogger Jan Autzen Laursen

Ncnean

Read Whisky blogger Jan Autzen Laursen's review of the delicious bottle of Nc'nean Organic Single Malt, distilled from Nc'nean. And how the distillery focuses on climate friendliness and Co2 neutrality.

Post by Jan Autzen Laursen

On the west coast of Scotland, Annabel Thomas has a vision to shake up the otherwise well-established Scotch whisky production. She wants to distill Scotch whisky that is both organic and CO2 neutral. Why the heck does the focus on climate change have to affect our beloved drops, which are stored in the most beautiful casks in the Scottish Highlands... perhaps because the time is ripe to see if you can actually change some processes without compromising the taste.

Meet the Nc'nean distillery on the west coast of Scotland, nestled between Tobermory and Ardnamurchan and Oban.

Here at Nc'nean, the vision is to make sustainable whisky and to improve its impact on the earth in terms of carbon footprint, pollution and biodiversity. The barley is 100% organic, the boilers are powered by renewable energy and 99.97% of the by-products are recycled. The whole thing is poured into 100% recycled bottles.

So what does an organic, CO2 neutral whisky like this... let's dive into the bottle and see.

Nc'nean Organic Single Malt Scotch Whisky 46% ABV

One thing that really stands out is the beautiful bottle design, no expense has been spared here. It really signals that this is a whisky that means business. When you pour yourself a delicious dram, you are greeted by an incredibly beautiful golden color.

The whisky is a NAS (No Age Statement) aged in red wine casks, American oak casks, and a short trip in Sherry casks to give it a little signature.

Scent: It has an incredibly delicious and sweet aroma of apricots and peaches as well as various spices. Definitely a delicious scent.
Taste: Citrus, nuts, fresh fruits, pear, apples, are you crazy an incredibly delicious and fruity flavor without being too nauseating. You can barely taste the booze, it's just incredibly delicious.
Aftertaste: A dry and very short aftertaste. You sit and get the feeling that you have just enjoyed a lot of nuts, definitely not bad.

Assessment:

I actually think you get an incredibly delicious whisky in this beautiful bottle. It can be enjoyed at just about any event and it will not disappoint, what a bottle to have on hand. The fact that with a focus on climate friendliness and CO2 neutrality, you can still make a product of such quality, it's really quite a feat. The distillery has been in operation since 2017 and when bottlings with age begin to appear, it will be really exciting to follow.
