The name says Copenhagen. The contents are distilled in Sweden. That is not a mistake but a reminder that the Øresund strait is narrower than most labels let on, and that Nordic spirits rarely stay inside one border.

    Expert description

København Klassisk Vodka is a Swedish Vodka from Nordic Gin House, made from winter-harvested barley and bottled at 40%.

Nordic Gin House stand behind the whole København range, which holds gin in several styles, a single malt whisky and this vodka. The name is a greeting to the Danish capital, while the distilling happens at Bergslagens Destilleri in Sweden. The series built its reputation on the gin side, where the classic bottling in particular has taken prizes home.

Barley is a less common choice for vodka than wheat or rye. The grain brings a rounder and slightly fuller character with clearer cereal sweetness, and the winter harvest reinforces it: the long growing season gathers more starch in the kernel. This is a vodka that is soft rather than sharp, which is why it holds up neat.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Pale and mild. Dry grain and a touch of white bread, with a very faint citrus note behind.

    Palate

Round and soft with a cereal sweetness filling the middle. The alcohol reads as warmth more than bite.

    Finish

Short and dry. The sweetness falls away quickly and leaves a clean, lightly floury impression.

    Did you know?

The København range also holds a Navy Strength Gin and a Single Malt Whisky. It is rare for a gin house to take the step across into whisky, and rarer still to do it under the same city name.

Frequently asked questions about København Klassisk Vodka

Why is it called København when it is made in Sweden?

Because the name belongs to the series, not to the production site. Nordic Gin House built the whole København family as a greeting to the Danish capital, while the distilling itself takes place at Bergslagens Destilleri on the Swedish side. That is common practice in Nordic spirits.

What makes barley different from wheat in a vodka?

Barley gives more body. Wheat leans towards the light and softly sweet, while barley lays in a rounder, more cereal sweetness that recalls young malt spirit a little. That is why this vodka tastes of more than the label numbers suggest.

    What does winter-harvested barley mean?

That the grain was sown in autumn and stood through the winter. The long ripening gathers more starch in the kernel, which gives a fuller starting point for fermentation. Winter barley is used in beer for the same reason.

    How is it best drunk?

Cold but not ice cold, in a small glass. Softness is its best quality, and that disappears if the bottle has been sitting in the freezer. To try it with food, keep to the pale end: fish, shellfish and fresh vegetables.

    Which drinks suit it?

The house suggestion is a Screwdriver with a slice of orange, and it holds up well because the cereal sweetness meets the citrus acidity without vanishing. It also works in a Vodka Tonic or a Sea Breeze. See more directions among our Vodka brands.

    Who are Nordic Gin House?

A Nordic spirits house that made its name with gin in several styles, from classic juniper-driven to navy strength and pink. The vodka arrived later as an extension of the København range.

Is it a good place to start if you are new to vodka?

Yes. It is mild enough to drink neat without experience, and at the same time it carries enough grain character for you to taste the difference between it and a hard-filtered standard vodka. That makes it a useful reference point.
