Behind almost every classic margarita sits a bottle of Especial Gold. The golden colour catches the bar light long before the first glass is poured, agave and vanilla rising from the glass — a tequila that has followed cocktail culture from the beach bars of Tijuana to shakers the world over.
Expert Description
José Cuervo Especial Gold is a Mexican Gold Tequila (Mixto), bottled at 38% ABV. It is produced at the La Rojeña distillery in the town of Tequila, Jalisco — home to the José Cuervo family since 1795 and one of the oldest continuously operating tequila distilleries in Mexico.
Especial Gold is a mixto tequila, where at least 51% of the sugar source comes from blue agave, with the rest from other sugars. The golden colour comes from blending an aged Reposado portion — rested at least two months in oak barrels — with younger tequila and a touch of caramel colouring. The result is a soft, approachable tequila that has served as many drinkers' introduction to the category for decades.

Did You Know?
Especial Gold is, according to several industry reports, the world's best-selling tequila — a position it owes in part to José Cuervo's role in taking the Margarita from the bars of Tijuana to the rest of the world, back when family member Juan Beckmann Gallardo promoted the brand across the United States in the 1940s.
