It is not whisky, and it does not pretend to be. Sloe Berry is a sloe liqueur made in Scotland for Glenglassaugh and bottled at 26%.

    The expert's description

Glenglassaugh Sloe Berry is a Scottish liqueur made with sloe berries and the distillery own spirit drink, bottled at 26% in a 50 cl bottle.

Sloes are the blue-black fruit of the blackthorn, tight and sharp until they meet sugar and alcohol. It is the same principle as English sloe gin, only with a Scottish spirit underneath.

The drink is sweet and works best after dinner or in a glass with ice and lemon. The distillery itself suggests mixing it with lemonade on long summer evenings, and some use it in white wine as well.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Ripe, dark berries with a sharp edge. Marzipan and almond behind it.

    Palate

Sweet and round with cherry, plum and a hint of bitter almond from the stones. The alcohol is mild at 26%.

    Finish

Short to medium with fruit and a light bitter note that keeps the sweetness in check.

    Did you know?

Sloes are the fruit of the blackthorn and are traditionally picked after the first night frost. The frost softens the skin so the berries give up their juice and colour more easily.

Frequently asked questions about Glenglassaugh Sloe Berry

    Is it whisky?

No. It is a sloe berry liqueur made with the distillery own spirit drink as its base. It sits at 26% and should be drunk as a liqueur, not as a single malt.

    What are sloe berries?

Small blue-black fruit from the blackthorn. They are hard and sharp on their own, but turn round and fruity once they steep in sugar and alcohol.

    How do you drink it?

Neat after dinner, over ice with a slice of lemon, or mixed with lemonade. The distillery itself suggests lemonade and ice for long summer evenings.

Can it be used in cooking?

Yes. It works over ice cream, in a fruit salad or as a splash in a sauce for game. The sweetness makes it easy to work with.

How long does it keep once opened?

Longer than whisky, because the sugar acts as a preservative. Keep it cool after opening and it will easily last a year.

What is the difference between this and sloe gin?

The base. Sloe gin is made with gin, while this is made with a Scottish spirit drink from Glenglassaugh. The fruit is the same.

What else does the distillery make?

The permanent range of coastal single malt. See it all in our Scotch Whisky selection.
