Glen Scotia Harbour Classic is a lightly peated Campbeltown Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in 1st fill bourbon casks and bottled at 40%.

The bottling works as the entry point to the distillery range. 1st fill bourbon casks lay vanilla and bright fruit in, and the light peating gives a smoke note that sits as a breath rather than a layer. The 40% makes the whisky easy to drink, but it also makes it less concentrated than the rest of the line-up.

Glen Scotia is a small distillery with only one pair of pot stills. Capacity is modest by modern standards, so the entire output has to cover the standard range, the festival bottles and the casks sold on to independent bottlers.

Tasting notes

Nose

Briny sea spray and sea breeze first, with floral violet notes and soft vanilla behind.

Palate

Ripe peach and crisp apple, with chewy fudge and a bright sweetness. The peat arrives late and settles as a dry, tangy edge beneath the fruit.

Finish

Short to medium. Tangy peat and maritime smoke that clears cleanly without hanging on.

How peated is it?

Lightly. There is clear peat in the finish, but it sits as a breath rather than filling the glass. Compared with Islay whisky it is mild, and most people will read the smoke as a spiced edge rather than the main flavour.

What does 40% mean in practice?

That the whisky is lighter and less concentrated than the rest of the range, where most sit at 46% or above. It is easier to drink over a longer stretch, but it also has less body, and the aromas fade faster in the glass.

Is it a good place to start with peated whisky?

Why is it called Harbour?

Because the distillery sits a few hundred metres from the harbour in Campbeltown. The town is built around the natural harbour at Campbeltown Loch, and both the whisky and the name tie back to it.

How does it differ from Double Cask?

Double Cask finishes in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks and is darker and sweeter. Harbour Classic sits entirely in bourbon casks, is brighter in both colour and flavour, and carries the light peat as its signature.

Can it be used in cocktails?

Yes, it works well in a highball with soda, where the light smoke and salt get room without the whisky turning heavy. At 40% it is also easy to work with, because it does not drown the other ingredients.

How is an opened bottle best stored?

Upright, dark and cool. At 40% the whisky is more sensitive to air than the stronger bottlings, so drink it within a year or so of opening if you want the freshest version of the smoke.
