Glen Scotia 2016/2025 Lady of the Glen 8 Year Old is a Campbeltown Single Malt Scotch Whisky finished in an ex-tawny port cask and bottled at cask strength 56.5%.

The whisky was distilled in 2016 and bottled in 2025 from cask number 8924, which gave 231 bottles, non-chill filtered and with no added colour. The choice of tawny over ruby is worth noting: tawny port has spent a long time in wood and is oxidative, nutty and drier, where ruby is fresh and berry-sweet. That suits a young, salty spirit better, because it adds depth rather than sweetness.

Lady of the Glen is run by Gregor Hannah and buys individual casks from across Scotland. The firm always bottles at cask strength, unfiltered and uncoloured, and it often goes for younger casks where there is still distillery to taste. An eight year old Glen Scotia is exactly the kind of cask the larger houses would typically have left alone for longer.

Tasting notes

Nose

Sea salt and seaweed meet red fruit and dried berries. The port lays a nutty sweetness on top, and there is a trace of dark chocolate beneath it all.

Palate

Full and intense. Dark fruit, spiced oak and chocolate, carried by a lightly oily texture. The cask strength pushes the salt forward, so the sweetness is never allowed to take over.

Finish

Long and warm. Balanced sweetness with maritime nuances and a final touch of spice.

What is the difference between tawny and ruby port in a whisky cask?

Tawny has spent years in wood before bottling and is therefore oxidative, nutty and drier. Ruby is young and fresh with clear berry sweetness. A tawny cask adds depth and nuttiness, where a ruby cask adds preserved red fruit — two quite different directions.

Is eight years not young for a single malt?

For a Speyside it would be. For Campbeltown it works, because the spirit is already heavy and oily and has enough body to stand on its own. The cask strength helps too — the 56.5% supplies the weight the years have not yet delivered.

How powerful is it to drink?

Powerful. At 56.5% there is bite, and the young spirit does not soften it. Taste it neat first, then add water in small measures — it takes it well, and the salt steps forward more clearly once the alcohol drops a little.

What do 231 bottles mean in practice?

That the bottling comes from one cask and cannot be made again. Once those 231 are gone, no more of this particular whisky exists. That is the whole principle behind single cask, and it is why the cask number appears on the label.

How does it taste compared with Glen Scotia's own bottlings?

Rawer and more direct. The distillery standard releases are adjusted for consistency and sit lower in strength, while this one is unfiltered, uncoloured and at cask strength. Is it peated?

No, not to any noticeable degree. Glen Scotia only makes peated spirit for a few weeks a year, and this cask comes from the unpeated production. The maritime note can read like smoke, but it is salt and minerality, not peat.

Does it suit someone new to Campbeltown whisky?

Not as a first meeting. The strength and the young spirit make it demanding. If you want to get to know the region, an older and gentler bottling is a softer place to start — but if you already know the style, this shows it from an unusual angle.
