It takes longer than most people think for a young eau-de-vie to earn the name VSOP. At Gautier, inside the old watermill on the Osme, the blend is given the time it needs until the colour turns warm and golden and the aroma matures.
Expert's Description
Gautier VSOP French Cognac is a Cognac, a blend of fine eaux-de-vie from Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne, bottled at 40%.
The house of Gautier, founded in 1755 under a royal charter from Louis XV, has carried a family tradition of coopering with Tronçais oak since the sixteenth century. That knowledge of wood and ageing lives on in the house's VSOP, where eaux-de-vie of several ages are blended into a rounded Cognac.
The grapes, mainly Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche and Colombard, come from Grande Champagne with a share from Petite Champagne, and the VSOP classification requires at least four and a half years in cask for the youngest eau-de-vie in the blend.
The result is a robust, full-bodied Cognac with a warm, golden colour, showing what extra time in cask can add compared with the house's younger VS.
